[Ringrazio infinitamente jigoro per avermi dato l'idea]
"Once, I had a dream, and this is it..."
Nel lontano 1995 Tuomas Holopainen, l'attuale tastierista e mente della band, fondò i suoi Nightwish, con l'intenzione di creare un gruppo che facesse una musica heavy metal, ma per bilanciare usasse come vocalist una bellissima voce femminile.
E così, reclutato il soprano Tarja Turunen, nacquero i Nightwish, che cominciarono con delle canzonette power metal, che presto saranno sostituite da composizioni più mature, sia dal punto di vista musicale, sia dal punto di vista delle liriche, più drammatiche e profonde negli ultimi album. Forse Tuomas a quei tempi non si rendeva minimamente conto di cosa ingenuamente stesse creando...
Ma torniamo a parlare di "Once": imponente, maestoso, epico, ogni commento sarebbe riduttivo per questo disco, che ogni sua canzone è un piccolo capolavoro.
La prima traccia a cui l'ingenuo ascoltatore si trova davanti è Dark Chest of Wonders, aperto da un riff molto heavy di Emppu Vuorinen, il chitarrista. Dopodiché si allaccia il basso e la batteria, e dopo l'orchestra, trasformandosi in un'introduzione travolgente. Nella strofa il coro fa da contrappunto alla splendida voce di Tarja.
Dopo aver sentito Dark Chest..., l'ascoltatore sarà talmente inebriato che non vedrà l'ora di ascoltare un'altra splendida canzone, e in Wish I Had An Angel troverà pane per i suoi denti! Senza introduzione strumentale, il brano parte subito con un impeccabile duetto tra Tarja e Marco Hietala, il bassista e secondo cantante della band, per poi attaccare con un accompagnamento di chitarra e una batteria elettronica. Il ritornello è interpretato dal vocione di Marco.
Siamo giunti a Nemo, il primo singolo dell'album, nonché la canzone più bella. Delicate note al pianoforte invoglieranno l'ascoltatore ad alzare il volume del suo lettore cd. Un passo sbagliato, poiché verrà investito da una potente onda sonora di chitarra e basso! Nella strofa è presente, oltre alla cristallina voce di Tarja, il basso, e la batteria di Jukka Nevalainen, che è il batterista sin dagli esordi della band. Nel ritornello si riaffaccia la chitarra, e compare l'orchestra, che verso il finale eseguirà un inserto strumentale molto bello.
Cori infernali e cupi fanno da introduzione alla mastodontica Planet Hell, un concentrato di energia negativa, che sfocia in una canzone che denuncia l'assurdità della guerra, in un mondo infernale, senza mezze misure. La strofa è interpretata da Tarja e Marco.
Utile per far riposare un po' le orecchie dopo Planet Hell, Creek Mary's Blood è una canzone che evoca lo sterminio degli indiani d'America da parte dell'uomo bianco. L'intro di questa splendida canzone è affidata a quella che sembra una danza tribale (?), che precede una melodia di chitarra classica e orchestra. Nella strofa Tarja canta con sottofondo dell'orchestra e di varie percussioni. Dopo subentra la chitarra con accordi lunghi ed epici, fino a giungere ad un assolo che riprende la musica del ritornello. Nel finale, John Two-Hawks, un artista Lakota invitato dalla band, recita un poema in lingua indiana.
Uno squillante violino elettrico ci risveglia dal torpore datoci dalla rilassante voce di John. Siamo di fronte a The Siren, ennesimo meraviglioso capitolo di questo fantastico album, una canzone orientaleggiante che evoca, con la sua melodia ipnotica, i richiami di una sirena (Tarja) verso un marinaio (Marco) che, legato, non può raggiungerla.
"Tutte le storie sono state raccontate, tutte le orchidee non ci sono più. Perso nel mio personale mondo, ora mi prendo cura dei giardini morti". Così recita il testo di Dead Gardens, la canzone più decadente di "Once", aperta dal riff più malevolo e funereo mai forgiato nella storia dei Nightwish. Per sottolineare il senso di abbattimento e di malinconia, in questa canzone non è stata inserita l'orchestra. Il finale consiste nella ripetizione ossessiva di un riff pesantissimo (al confronto gruppi come Candlemass o Trouble sono praticamente innocui) che si trancia di netto.
Ben più maestosa ma sempre molto cupa, è Romanticide che continua sullo stesso filone di Dead Gardens, con chitarre con una distorsione prossima al rumore. In questo brano la musica è solo un veicolo per il testo, privo di speranze e probabilmente autobiografico. Molto particolare è il finale, scandito da una chitarra violenta e un basso frustante, che accompagnano il cantato di Marco, che non è altro che un sussurro rabbioso. Con un insieme di urla e grida incazzate la canzone termina e, con essa, la parte più cupa del disco. Probabilmente questa canzone è servita come valvola di sfogo a Tuomas, per eliminare tutta quella energia negativa accumulata, a causa di una forte pressione commerciale, dovuta al successo della band.
"La mia caduta sarà in te. Il mio amore sarà in te. Se tu sarai colui che mi ferirà, io sanguinerò per sempre". Queste altre non possono essere che le parole di un innamorato (corrisposto o no), in fatti stiamo parlando della mitica Ghost Love Score, il vero capolavoro del disco, che supera i dieci minuti di durata.
Questo è un brano molto particolare, non solo per l'esecuzione (metal più ricercato unito alla raffinatezza orchestrale), ma per le tematiche trattate. Infatti sembra che Tuomas, dopo essersi liberato di tutte le ansie e le frustrazioni, abbia il desiderio di ricominciare a cercare l'innocenza e la tranquillità (questo è in realtà tutto il concetto di "Once").
Con il termine del bellissimo finale, scandito da cori epici che recitano la frase che ho citato, termina anche "Once" inteso come concept-album. Le ultime due canzoni, infatti, sono molto belle ma non si ricollegano ai brani precedenti.
Kuolema Tekee Taiteitijan è una dolce ballad nella lingua madre del gruppo, il finlandese. Per certi versi può ricordare Lappi-Lapland del primo cd, "Angel Fall First", ma in Kuolema l'atmosfera è più commovente e meno "da menestrelli".
Higher Than Hope è dedicata a Marc Bruealand, un amico della band recentemente scomparso, dopo aver combattuto una dura battaglia contro il cancro. La canzone si alterna a parti acustiche e improvvise esplosioni elettriche. Verso il finale, si sente la voce registrata di Marc, accompagnata dal battere di una grancassa, come per simboleggiare un passo affaticato.
In conclusione, Once è uno di quegli album che ritengo "universali", cioè che si può trovare anche tra gli scaffali di chi, di norma, ascolta solo black o death metal (esperienza personale). Insomma, a mio parere, il capolavoro della band e uno dei migliori dischi metal in assoluto.
