Cobain l'aveva detto: i Nirvana avevano sostanzialmente concluso il loro percorso con l'uscita di "In Utero" (di cui ho preso la splendida super deluxe edition del ventennale uscita la scorsa settimana, per fortuna avevo un buono dal discaro) e avrebbero fatto un ultimo disco acustico (che mi piace pensare abbiano fatto e che sia "Unplugged In New York"). La prima volta che vidi questo live infatti (pescato da qualche parte sulla rete, anche se la versione che girava era incompleta) la cosa che più mi colpì fu l'impatto favoloso del suono: le due chitarre (Pat Smear, ex Germs, doveva scegliere se entrare nei Red Hot Chili Peppers o nei Nirvana; ovvia e naturale la sua scelta) e la possibilità quindi per Kurt di concentrarsi maggiormente sulla voce (sua dichiarazione) portarono la band al punto più alto e quindi conclusivo della sua evoluzione.
Questo è lo splendido concerto che documenta quel momento irripetibile della loro storia ("Unplugged In New York" lo documenterà in versione acustica con la stessa formazione; ha un senso quindi in qualche modo affiancarli), dove grande spazio viene ovviamente dedicato agli (allora) nuovi pezzi di "In Utero" senza dimenticare "Nevermind" e "Bleach" dai quali viene estratto comunque molto materiale (da "Incesticide" verrà proposta invece solamente "Sliver"). Solo una è la cover in scaletta: quella "The Man Who Sold The World" (Bowie) che mentre nell'Unplugged brillerà, acustica, di luce propria, qui esplode elettrica.
E' la lunga jam autodistruttiva "Endless, Nameless" a chiudere e a questo punto lo spettacolo imbocca una deriva decisamente allucinata: la selvaggia distruzione degli strumenti, l'affascinante atmosfera del palco creata dalle due donne trasparenti e alate della copertina di "In Utero" e da parte della scenografia di quel capolavoro del video di "Heart-shaped Box", gli sputi sulle telecamere, Novoselic inginocchiato che attacca la jam con un riff, sbatte il basso per terra ripetutamente per poi conficcarlo negli amplificatori e Cobain che prima spacca la chitarra e ci salta sopra, poi vaga per il palco suonando lo strumento distrutto e facendo crollare delle casse, quindi si inginocchia davanti al pubblico e invita esplicitamente, teatralmente i ragazzi a salire sul palco (tirandone su uno, tra l'altro) e infine decapita uno dei due manichini con la chitarra. E' una sorta di anticelebrazione. Voi direte: "Ci sembra abbastanza", vero. Ma quell'applauso che Cobain, dopo aver definitivamente abbandonato la chitarra (o ciò che ne rimaneva) fa alla folla che lo acclamava entusiasta alla fine del concerto, con quella smorfia grottesca sul viso, colma di sarcasmo, rabbia, e di chissà cos'altro (Novoselic dichiarò che Kurt non voleva che il pubblico cantasse in coro con loro ai concerti perchè vedeva in questo una sorta di sottomissione dell'individualismo degli spettatori), è difficile dimenticarlo; poichè ulteriore dimostrazione e simbolo del profondo disagio nei confronti di tutte quelle persone che, là fuori, lo esaltavano e pendevano dalle sue labbra.
