1990: il periodo d'oro del Death metal era cominciato. Grazie a lavori del calibro di Leprosy, Altars of Madness e Consuming Impulse, il genere stava crescendo e diventando popolare, pronto ad un'inaspettata quanto trionfale esplosione. Partorito in Florida dalla mente di Chuck Schuldiner, il Death metal vedeva tra i gruppi più illustri i Death, i Morbid Angel, i Deicide e gli Obituary. Questi ultimi si distinsero dai loro celebri colleghi in quanto artefici di un Death metal più lento e ossessivo (sempre se di lentezza si può parlare): non a caso negli anni successivi vedremo opere con richiami Doom (su tutti, The End Complete).
Dopo un esordio fulminante datato 1989 (Slowly We Rot), i nostri ritentano il colpaccio l'anno seguente. Dopo aver sostituito il chitarrista Allen West col mitico James Murphy (noto per le sue collaborazioni con band del calibro di Death, Cancer e Testament), i nostri si rintanano nei leggendari Morrisound Studios di Tampa per dedicarsi alla registrazione di uno degli album più influenti della storia del Death metal: Cause of Death. Con l'aiuto del mito Scott Burns, i ragazzi realizzano un vero e proprio capolavoro, nel quale spicca una produzione maestosa, in cui a farla da padrone sono le chitarre, con un timbro granitico e penetrante che diventerà marchio di fabbrica Obituary.
L'opera è un concentrato di Death metal puro e senza tanti compromessi: diretto come una sassata in mezzo agli occhi. Riff di chitarra velocissimi alternati ad ottimi accordi sostenuti; drumming impeccabile e precisissimo (sentire l'accelerata di doppia cassa di Turned Inside Out); growl marcio, inimitabile e talvolta incomprensibile mentre il caro bassista di turno serve solo a fare numero. L'album si apre nel migliore dei modi con l'oscura Infected, in cui notiamo la predisposizione di John Tardy a concentrarsi su tre parole: rot, die, kill (un po' ripetitivo...). L'opener è seguita da Body Bag, che continua su questo stile, anche se con un ritmo meno dannato. Dopo queste due ottime song arriva una delle canzoni più famose del gruppo, nonché di tutto il Death metal: Chopped in Half, canzone claustrofobica e inno Death, un po' come una Maze of Torment. A questo punto un'altra grande canzone: Circle of the Tyrants, cover dei Celtic Frost, qua rivisitata in chiave più veloce e pesante, come vuole lo stile di questa band; senza dubbio uno dei punti più alti dell'album. All'ottima cover succede Dying, brano un po' noioso e che sa tanto di riempitivo. Fortunatamente a risollevare il tutto ci pensa Find the Arise, canzone violentissima e veloce. Ora si arriva al trittico finale che comincia con la title-track: ritmi apparentemente lenti si fanno più veloci per poi scemare in Memories Remain, brano dall'incedere lento e tragico, che prelude a un finale grandioso. Sì, perché a chiudere l'album ci pensa uno dei brani più famosi del gruppo: Turned Inside Out, la canzone migliore del disco, non a caso posta alla fine (dulcis in fundo...). Questa canzone è leggenda: i riff sono geniali, l'assolo pure e poi quella fottuta pausa che ti tiene sulle spine prima che la musica torni, stavolta con un riff assassino, concepito davvero in maniera strepitosa. Canzone veramente superiore, anche per la prestazione dei fratelli Tardy: John pare più ispirato che mai, mentre Donald dà il meglio di sé.
Che aggiungere? Cause of Death è un disco omogeneo e ben suonato, leggermente diverso dal Death metal canonico. Lo consiglio vivamente agli amanti del genere che non l'hanno mai sentito o a chi sta prendendo confidenza col Death metal e sia alla ricerca di un lavoro potente ed energico.
