Ormai penso che tutti sappiano che i Pantera negli anni '80 avevano sonorità del tutto differenti da "Vulgar Display of Power" e "The Great Southern Trendkill". Tornando a quell'epoca, ecco una recensione su questo "I Am the Night", il quale, che ci piaccia o no, rappresenta un pezzo della loro carriera. Allora i Pantera erano dei giovincelli intorno ai vent'anni ed erano un gruppo glam metal/speed metal fortemente influenzato da Kiss, Van Halen e Judas Priest.
Ad essere sincero, non ho mai apprezzato il vecchio stile musicale del quartetto texano (tolto "Power Metal" con Phil Anselmo), il quale altro non era che un connubio malriuscito di Mötley Crüe e Judas Priest, con un cantante come Terry Glaze che definirlo disastroso è riduttivo (fortuna che arrivò in seguito Anselmo, anche se pure lui, col tempo, perderà molti punti a causa della sua passione nel bucarsi le vene, passione che rischiò anche di spedirlo all'altro mondo dopo un concerto in Texas nel 1996).
"I Am the Night" uscì nel 1985, prodotto dal padre di Vinnie e Dime, Jerry Abbott (nel disco creditato con il nome "The Eldn"). Prima di fare una panoramica delle composizioni, ci tengo a dire che questo lavoro è di poco sopra lo zero spaccato, sia a livello di produzione (vabbè, erano gli anni '80) sia a livello di creatività (la monotonia regna sovrana in quasi tutta la durata del prodotto, nonostante le buone prestazioni tecniche dei fratelli). L'omonima "I Am the Night" sembra uno scarto dei Judas Priest; "On Ward We Rock" è semplicemente orrenda; "Daughters of the Queen" viene salvata dall'insufficienza grazie ai riff del grande Darrell; "Come On Eyes" sembrano i Mötley Crüe fiacchi dopo una notte infuocata con le bagnine di Baywatch (Tommy Lee docet); "Forever Tonight" è una ridicola ballad ove Glaze dà il meglio del peggio. Tuttavia, ci sono alcuni episodi che si possono considerare validi come l'iniziale "Hot and Heavy" e buoni esempi di speed metal come "Down Below" e "Valhalla".
Sicuramente non è il peggiore dei Pantera dell'era glam, in quanto l'esordio "Metal Magic" è imbattibile in termini di schifezza e se fossi stato al loro posto, prima di pubblicarlo, ci avrei pensato più volte). Sconsigliato vivamente ai fans del periodo thrash/groove metal, forse un glamster nostalgico degli anni '80 potrebbe apprezzarlo. Fortunatamente, i Pantera si riscattarono e seppero lasciare segni indelebili nella storia dell'heavy metal anni '90 con "Cowboys From Hell" e "Vulgar Display of Power".
