Molto probabilmente la bella avventura oscura dei Paradise Lost, partita dalle parti di Halifax (Inghilterra) nel lontano 1988, dovrebbe, in qualche modo, far riflettere attentamente tutti i loro più grandi sostenitori.
Sin da giovani hanno sudato le canoniche sette camicie, hanno pubblicato album bellissimi e sempre pieni di magica innovazione ("Gothic", "Icon", "Draconian Times", "One Second", ecc..), verso la fine degli anni novanta hanno perso completamente la testa dietro a Depeche Mode e Sisters of Mercy andando vicini alla saturazione fisica e psicologica con il troppo morbido "Believe in Nothing" ed infine son ritornati nuovamente ad occupare la solita carreggiata "gotica" pubblicando nel 2007 l'album della riconciliazione del loro glorioso passato.
Ed oggi, in un music-business in cui troppe cose son programmate fino all'eccesso, Holmes e soci sono ancora qui e hanno deciso di pubblicare due pietre preziosissime che i fan più accaniti difficilmente potrebbero tralasciare: un DVD con il concerto tenuto nell'aprile 2007 al Koko di Londra e un live album, composto da 2 CD, che rappresenta in egual modo le più importanti songs di tutta la loro brillante carriera (synth rock compreso).
E' un viaggio targato Paradise Lost, dal quale possiamo trarre come prima traccia il famosissimo single "The Enemy" che appartiene al loro ultimo album "In Requiem" pubblicato a maggio dello scorso anno, i pezzi storici, antichi e miliari come "Gothic", "As I Die", "Say Just a Word", "One Second" e "Embers Fire" e gli immancabili singles synth rock degli album di mezzo come "Mouth", "So Much is Lost", "Erased" e "No Celebration". Il compito di completare il tutto nei migliori dei modi è affidato a molti altri pezzi che, nonostante non abbiano avuto maggior successo rispetto a quelli che ho nominato, ci stanno comunque a pennello e son stati inseriti da parte della band inglese con molta attenzione e con particolare accuratezza. Se invece vi capitasse di procurarvi direttamente il DVD, avreste in più, oltre al suddetto concerto, anche i due videoclip ufficiali di "The Enemy" e "Praise Lamented Shade", un duraturo e interessante documentario e l'intervista con gli stessi Paradise Lost.
Una cosa che mi ha comunque altamente deluso è stato il fatto che, lo scorso marzo, il promoter di turno, qui in Italia, li ha fatti esibire come gruppo di spalla agli HIM (lasciatemelo dire e giustamente contestami alla grande se non condividete), una delle band più inutili e insignificanti del nostro pianeta, e qualcuno ha giustamente gridato "allo scandalo!". Penso si siano lasciati un po' andare in quest'ultimo periodo, ritengo che, attraverso le interviste che ho avuto modo di leggere ("Piantatela una volta per tutte, voi giornalisti, con questa storia dei Paradise Lost "padrini" del gothic metal e degli HIM loro fedeli discepoli"), si siano sottovalutati un po' troppo e abbiano abbandonato ogni presa di posizione di fronte a tutto ciò che hanno realizzato, in maniera brillante ed altamente esauriente, in passato. Tuttavia questa era soltanto una piccola parentesi ed inviterei i fan ad acquistare quest'utilissima e freschissima "anatomia della malinconia".
