Esistono canzoni, talmente famose e "rappresentative", in grado di mettere in ombra l'intera carriera di un artista, altre hanno invece la capacità di far passare in secondo piano solo quelle contenute nello stesso album; fortunantamente solo per gli ascoltatori più distratti "Kiss" è "la canzone" di Prince, ben altri sono infatti i gioielli che l'artista di Minneapolis ci ha regalato negli anni. Tuttavia è innegabile che l'album che la contiene, "Parade", sia ricordato prevalentemente per essere "il disco di Kiss", sminuendone così la bellezza delle altre tracce contenute. Certo "Parade" non ha dalla sua la spinta rock che pervade "Purple Rain" e nemmeno la varietà quasi enciclopedica che caratterizza il successivo "Sign O'The Times", è però probabilmente l'album che somiglia maggiormente al suo autore, che testimonia la piena maturazione del suo originalissimo mix di stili e linguaggi musicali ed è soprattutto il disco del suo periodo d'oro a suonare ancora attualissimo e moderno.
L'album, nato come colonna sonora del film "Under The Cherry Moon", interpretato dallo stesso Prince (un flop ai botteghini), si presenta più essenziale e scarno (negli arrangiamenti) rispetto ai suoi predecessori ma suona altrettanto stravagante (se non di più), accostando sperimentazioni sonore a scorrevoli melodie e rimanendo sempre in bilico tra l'eccesso kitsch e la citazione colta. Ecco così che in poco più di mezz'ora Prince dà prova del suo talento creando soluzioni a-ritmiche che suonano ardite ancora oggi ("New Position", "Life Can Be So Nice"), si cala nei panni del chansonnier per il cabaret di "Do U Lie?" e nel melò di "Under The Cherry Moon", perfeziona la sua idea di funky-pop ("Mountains", "Anotherloverholenyohead", "Girls & Boys") mai contagioso come stavolta e dimostra la sua abilità di compositore nel languido e cinematografico strumentale "Venus De Milo". E se ad aprire l'album è un sontuoso e divertito pastiche orchestrale, Prince lo chiude con quella che ancora oggi è sua ballata più intimista e accorata, quella "Sometimes It Snows In April" che, inaspettatamente, avvicina il nostro al cantautorato americano e che sigilla il suo lavoro più semplicemente complesso e geniale.
Per una volta sola provate a dimenticare "Kiss"...
