Sinclair Road, la strada più povera nel quartiere più ricco della Londra anni '60 e '70. Sto parlando Di Kensington, Olympia per la precisione. Il numero civico è il 35 dove oggi, tristemente abbandonata e con fiori selvatici a germogliare, nessuno più sa cosa sia nato lì. Ragazzi è proprio in quelle stanze che i primi Queen avrebbero sviluppato le idee per il loro grande avvio: Ladies and gentlemen, arriva la Regina. 1973. I Queen non erano famosi ma a Londra non di certo erano un gruppo qualunque. Dopo le piccole grandi esperienze degli Smile con May e Taylor e di Mercury con i Wreckage ecco che parte il loro primo album. Non venderà molto, sarà quasi inosservato ma sappiamo che capita spesso anche ai grandi.
L’inizio dell’ album è dei più scoppiettanti con “Keep Yourself Alive” , un vero e proprio inno alla gioia glamour che si stava creando a quei tempi. E’ una canzone molto atipica nel repertorio Queen perché presenta non solo un grande assolo di Taylor il quale dichiarò che gli assolo erano solo sfoggio, non arte (infatti!) ma anche variazioni di tonalità sullo stesso ritornello, cosa rara nei Queen. Il tamburello di Freddie e quella chitarra un po’ sorniona di May non di certo faranno gridare al miracolo ma prometteranno bene. Frizzante. Il secondo brano “Doing All Right” è datato Smile, scritto da May e Tim Staffel ( cantante degli Smile, gruppo embrione dei Queen). Suppongo sia il pezzo che farà già capire che i Queen vorranno orientarsi su barocchismi e cori. Si passa da un romantico e languido inizio ad una vera scarica “abbassa volume delle casse” centrale per poi concludere con tanto di cori quasi gregoriani. May e Taylor sono tecnicamente all’ unisono. Freddie Mercury farà già capire di che pasta è il suo timbro vocale. Figuriamoci anni dopo la sua estensione. “Great King Rat”, una cavalcata sporca musicalmente e tematicamente. Difficile che essa non trasporti. Forse un po’ portata per le lunghe ma risente molto del clima post '68 che vede un Freddie trattare temi poco glam e molto rock, protesta contro famiglia, istituzione, società, religione ma stranamente inneggia Cristo e la trasgressione. Si ha una sensazione di omologazione agli standard di quei tempi sia come testo che musica. Finisce nel dimenticatoio.
“My Fairy Queen” . Splendida, non c’è che dire. Mitologica, romantica, barocca, che altro? Grande esecuzione pianistica di uno svettante Freddie che immagina “terre dove scorrono fiumi di vino, dove ci sono cavalli alati, api senza pungiglione… ” e un re, forse Oberon il re delle fate, che domina. Curiosamente, grazie a questo brano, Freddie Bulsara cambierà il suo cognome in Mercury (messaggero degli Dei) invocando la “Mother Mercury” ( da notare l’ ambiguità sessuale). Sconvolse i Queen stessi. Il pezzo più bello dell’ album. Arte=Musica. “ Liar” è uno dei brani più difficili da proporre in scena. Ancora oggi le migliaia di cover band si tengono lontane. Deriva da “Lover” , vecchio pezzo dei Wreckage, ma vede ancora un Mercury molto nervoso ma stavolta ambiguo vocalmente e non solo. Il maestro è di sicuro Taylor che si dimostra batterista carismatico e molto inventivo e Brian May che conferma le sue velleità chitarristiche. Pezzo hard rock, 6 minuti e mezzo, molte variazioni. Per gli amanti rock, punzecchiante.
“The Night Comes Down” . Scritta da May, punto debole dell’ album. Scontata ballata che riprende un vecchio arpeggio abbastanza suggestivo del brano “Blast” al tempo degli Smile ma che perde appunto quell’ accenno di suggestione che invece Brian porterà in auge l’ anno dopo. Canzoncina da inizio. “Modern Times Rock’ n’ Roll” . Taylor si cimenta da cantante e con la sua voce stile Rod Stewart riesce anche in grandi salti vocalici in questo spietato rock’ n’ roll, spietato perché molto veloce e perché denuncia la scomparsa dello stesso stile. Molto scontato, roba da poco con un ritornello che sembra la sigla di “Batman” . Non decolla. “Son And Daughter” . Ecco su questo pezzo ci sono stati sempre pareri discordanti. Io sono tra quelli che lo considera un pezzo qualunque, Si trascina stanco fino alla fine con un ritmo da centro sociale che pretende di essere alternativo quando non lo è in realtà. Come mai anche il casto May scrive anche “ … spalare merda… ” ? Si può essere intelligenti anche senza dire schifezze e lui lo dimostrerà dopo quel flop fino ad oggi. Il testo non è ambiguo come vorrebbe, è insensato. Paura del nuovo? Sì. I Queen non sono stati i pionieri del glam, è bene che i fan più ottusi lo sappiano. Quest’ album e questo pezzo in particolare lo dimostrano. Omologato al resto. “Jesus” . Dal blasfemo al sacro. E’ una marcia in cui Freddie osanna ancora la figura di Gesù e lo fa stile “Miracle Play” , le antiche opere teatrali inglesi religiose. Abbastanza riuscito anche se nessuno mai è riuscito a capire se a Freddie importasse più lo zoroastrismo o l’anglicanesimo. Non male.
“Queen” è un album in cui i membri non hanno ancora capito in che direzione muoversi. Talvolta danno segni di novità, altre volte si sentono costretti a fare i conti con i gusti dell’ epoca. Non possiamo condannarli, è il compromesso di tutte le band emergenti e quel Freddie Mercury che nella copertina alza al cielo un pick up farà capire, insieme a loro, dopo solo un anno, a che livelli arriverà uno dei gruppi più eclatanti della Storia della musica leggera.

I Queen rappresentano un caso abbastanza particolare nella storia del rock, vendendo vagonate di dischi e conquistando i megaconcerti di tutto il mondo.
Il sound sovrarrangiato e ricercato di questi primi lavori rivela un certosino e maniacale lavoro di post-produzione in studio, una costante nelle produzioni future.

Il riff d'inizio, quello di "Keep Yourself Alive", presenta un Brian May già valido e un Roger Taylor nell'inizio della sua carica di batterista.
Queen appare un buon lavoro d'esordio, sicuramente influenzato dai Led Zeppelin, ma con un tocco originale e unico nel genere.

Questo album va posto come minimo tra i primi 3 o 4 dei Queen, per la visione sperimentale della band.
