Il 1997 è stato un anno a dir poco cruciale per l'Epic/Power Metal: i Manowar erano praticamente a terra, reduci da 2 dischi come il gigante dai piedi d'argilla "The Triumph Of Steel" e il deludente "Louder Than Hell". Proprio in quell'anno debuttarono due band che ambivano al trono di Kings Of Metal: gli Hammerfall con "Glory To The Brave" dalla Svezia e appunto i Rhapsody con "Legendary Tales" dall'Italia, capitanati da Sua Maestà Luca Turilli, virtuoso chitarrista e songwriter dalla fervida fantasia. Nel 1997 la formazione comprendeva anche il tastierista Alex Staropoli, l'ottimo batterista Daniele Carbonera e il divino vocalist Fabio Lione da Pisa, mentre le parti di basso furono affidate al produttore Sascha Paeth.
"Racconti Leggendari" presentà già ben sviluppati tutti i marchi di fabbrica dell'inconfondibile sond dei Rhapsody, ma l'elemento sinfonico, seppur già largamente presente non è ancora predominante come in "Sinfonia delle Terre Incantate", qui sono più nettamente avvertibili le doti chitarristiche di Turilli e quelle tastieristiche di Staropoli.
La Saga della Spada di Smeraldo, di cui questo album rappresenta l'inizio si apre con la bellissima intro "Ira Tenax", 1 minuto e 13 secondi ben delineati dalla tastiera di Staropoli, sulla cui base si sviluppa un solenne coro in latino, dopodichè parte "Warrior Of Ice", che ci presenta il guerriero protagonista degli album dei Rhapsody fino a "Power Of The Dragonflame" grandissima canzone d'impatto con un ritornello anthemeggiante che rappresenta un vero e proprio grido di libertà "Mighty Warrior for the legend ride again, from the hills for peace and love to the sea of gold, my land must be free". "Rage Of The Winter" è la prima canzone dei Rhapsody a descrivere la bellezza della natura, nello specifico di un innevato paesaggio invernale. Canzone stupenda caratterizzata da una lunga sezione stumentale dove Turilli e Staropoli danno il meglio di se sfornando asssoli e melodie ammalianti e maestose. Ritornello davvero al cardiopalma, sentire per credere.
"Forest Of Unicorns" è una bellissima e rilassante ballata medievale per chitarra acustica e flauto, che si anima nel refrain, che sembra davvero cantato da un coro di elfi. Bellissimo anche il testo che descrive una valle pacifica e sperduta dove corrono gli unicorni e la libertà ha il suo trono. "Flames Of Revenge" è forse il punto meno ispirato dell'album: resta comunque una bella conzone incendiaria e battagliera al punto giusto, soprattutto nei live. Dopo il breve e rilassante strumentale "Virgin Skies" si arriva a una delle canzoni più sballose ed esaltanti del disco: "Land Of Immortals", quasi una "Emerald Sword" allo stato embrionale: tampi velocissimi, cantato esaltante e ritonello trascinante, ma trascinante di brutto, per questo capolavoro assoluto che non chiede altro che essere cantato a squarciagola. "Echoes Of Tragedy" è un esperimento che ricalca parzialmente "The Crown And The Ring" Dei Man O' War: al posto dell'organo qui c'è il pianoforte. Strofe intense e sofferte by Fabio Lione e ritornello cadanzato e solenne cantato da un coro tenorile. Molto bello (come sempre) il testo che descrive un paesaggio devastato dalla guerra. Ultima stupenda bordata power con "Lord Of The Thunder": potente, maestosa, catchy e terremotante, ultimo scenario di battaglia prima della stupenda titletrack che chiude il primo viaggio nelle terre di Algalord: "Legendary Tales" inizia con il sommesso e affascinante intreccio di flauto e mandolino, che ci trasporta direttamente in un antico villaggio medievale, ormai al tramonto; i cavalieri dormono, i vecchi guardano il focolare, godendosi questo momento di pace prima delle nuove guerre, e menestrelli danzano intorno a un falò, cantando di sanguinose battaglie a gesta di eroi. Questo aulico quadretto viene interrotto dal solenne ritornello, ma poi ritorna la pace, fino a spegnersi nella pace dell'alba "The old song is fading now, but my old dream carries on" I Racconti Leggandari finiscono qui, ma la la saga è appena comiciata...
In conclusione un grandissimo debutto per i Rhapsody, di cui spero vivavante di aver reso a pieno la poesia in questa umile recensione, che concludo proponendo "Rage Of The Winter" come inno per le prossime olimpiadi invernali.
