Nel 1972 gli Scorpions pubblicano il non eccelso "Lonesome Crow", il loro primo album. Alla chitarra compariva il venerato Michael Schenker in una delle sue prove peggiori. Nello stesso anno l'alcolico chitarrista lascia gli Scorpions per unirsi ad un band di tutto rispetto, gli UFO. Il gruppo tedesco si scioglie fino a quando Rudolf Schenker, vero motore della band, non chiede ad un certo Ulrich Roth di unirsi a loro come chitarrista solista. Roth accetta ma la formazione originale degli Scorpions cambia: oltre al rinomato chitarrista subentrano al basso Francis Bucholz e alla batteria Jurgen Rosenthal dei Dawn Road, il gruppo dal quale proveniva Roth. Ovviamente alla voce rimane il notevole Klaus Meine. Con questa eccellente line-up viene alla luce il vero primo capolavoro degli Scorpions vecchia maniera: "Fly To The Rainbow".
Il disco si distacca dal precedente non solo per le migliori prove chitarristiche eseguite da Uli Jon Roth, ma anche per un deciso cambio di rotta, dal rock psichedelico dell'esordio ad un hard rock - sempre contaminato - decisamente più viscerale. Il brano di apertura ne è la riprova, a partire dal nome: "Speedy's Coming". E' la traccia più breve dell'album ma riassume tutto ciò che faranno gli Scorpions: tanto buon hard rock e assolo al fulmicotone. "Drifting Sun", cantata dallo stesso Roth, permette al chitarrista di presentarsi come grande ammiratore di Jimi Hendrix, riprendendo il forte uso della leva del vibrato e i suoni effettati. La lunga coda strumentale è esemplare per quanto riguardo il livello tecnico della band. E' molto interessante anche la ballatona di turno, "Fly People Fly", dal testo semplice e ripetitivo con molti assolo di chitarra. Una struttura che il nostro affezionato gruppo riprenderà sempre nei loro lavori. In "This Is My Song" compare uno dei primi esempi di chitarra incrociata (che riprenderanno i Thin Lizzy e i Judas Priest, giusto per citare i più famosi) di Schenker e Roth. Il testo sembra una filastrocca, con due singole frasi ripetute per tutta la durata del brano cantate però da Klaus Meine in maniera impeccabile e con una melodia veramente eccezionale. A chiudere il disco, la traccia migliore: "Fly To The Rainbow". Dopo un intro di chitarra acustica dove già si intravede il carattere neoclassico di Roth, prosegue alternando il sound di una ballata a doppie chitarre affilate come rasoi e un outro psichedelico di cinque-sei minuti che è un omaggio alle acide improvvisazioni di Hendrix.
Anche se questo album può sembrare ancora piuttosto acerbo rispetto ai capolavori successivi ("In Trance", "Virgin Killer" e "Taken By Force"), racchiude in se tutte le potenzialità della grande band tedesca. I suoni sono già definiti così come i ruoli dei singoli componenti all'interno del gruppo. E' vero pure che Roth in futuro si prenderà più spazio, Schenker eseguirà ritmiche più coinvolgenti e Meine ci entusiasmerà ancora maggiormente con il suo timbro vocale delicato ed espressivo, tuttavia, nel 1974, gli Scorpions avevano già capito tutto. Ed era solo l'inizio.
Ps: in là con gli anni sono riusciti anche a fare copertine migliori... questa è veramente oscena.
