Terzo live ufficiale degli Scorpions, questo "Live Bites" del 1995 fu pubblicato essenzialmente per coprire vuoti discografici e di idee. In effetti non aggiunge molto alla storia della band tedesca, però, sotto sotto, non è poi così male.
Si tratta di un vero e proprio collage live con esibizioni che vanno dal 1988 al 1994 catturate in diversi concerti in giro per il globo (Germania, Messico, Stati Uniti, Russia), e poi montate insieme come se il tutto fosse un unico show. Il volume di uscita delle registazioni è bello alto, il sound nitido, cristallino e le performance nel complesso, pur essendo prive di spunti particolarmente ispirati, sono tecnicamente perfette; essì, però forse troppo, per certi versi sembrano le stesse versioni in studio con il pubblico di sottofondo, insomma penso che ci sia un bel po' di overdub, ma pazienza.
La scaletta è in gran parte costituita dai pezzi provenienti dai dischi più recenti come "Face the Heat" e "Crazy World" ed in generale dal periodo anni '80-'90; anche la formazione è la stessa dell'ultimo disco, tranne che per un paio di brani, "Living For Tomorrow" e "Rhythm Of Love", nei quali figura ancora il bassista Francis Buchholz al posto del suo successore Ralph Rieckermann. La prima parte del cd è quella che regala forse le maggiori emozioni, con "Tease Me Please Me" che riscalda a dovere l'atmosfera, "Is There Anybody There", una trascinante "Rhythm of Love", per poi raggiungere l'apice con un tuffo negli anni '70, "In Trance", direi molto convincente nella sua compattezza sonora e cantata magistralmente da Meine. Dopo queste prime track si comincia a viaggiare fra alti e bassi. "Living For Tomorrow" eseguita a Leningrado nel '92 è uno dei momenti migliori, peccato che la stessa identica versione fosse già stata pubblicata qualche anno prima nella raccolta di ballads "Still Loving You". Buona la cover del popolare messicano "Ave Maria No Morro", che vede Klaus Meine esibire un discreto spagnolo su di un convincente tappeto di chitarre acustiche allestito da Rudolf Schenker e Matthias Jabs. Il resto è rappresentato da esecuzioni very hard, con il batterista Herman Rarebell (qui nell'ultima sua partecipazione con gli scorpioni) che ci va giù pesante, ma anche da una marea di riff un po' ripetitivi ed assoli prevedibili ("Concerto in V", "Alien Nation", "Hit Between The Eyes", "Crazy World").
Si tratta però anche del primo live in cui compare in track list la famosa "Wind Of Change", a cui è affidata la chiusura del concerto, gran bella canzone, ma suonata e cantata senza infamia e senza lode, molto simile all'originale in studio, insomma, voglia di rischiare e improvvisare pari a zero e questa è la pecca che caratterizza un po' tutto il live. Oltre ai 13 pezzi dal vivo, vi sono due inediti in studio, anzi uno, perchè "White Dove" venne pubblicata come singolo già un anno prima, ed è in realtà una cover di un pezzo degli Omega, gruppo ungherese, una discreta ballad dal testo pacifista, orecchiabile, ma niente da tramandare ai posteri; l'altro è "Heroes don't Cry", altro lento, questo decisamente più noioso, con dei coretti fin troppo invadenti e pop.
Che dire, un album senza molte pretese, la classica trovata commerciale messa lì solo per mantenere in auge il nome della band. Una performance discreta, sicuramente lontana dai tempi del "Tokyo Tapes", quelli del geniale chitarrista Uli Jon Roth, ma anche inferiore al "World Wide Live", salvata però da un buon lavoro, sebbene poco onesto, in post-produzione ed in sede di montaggio, lavoro capace di fornire al tutto la giusta compattezza e potenza sonora, aspetti comunque importanti nel genere metal. Un disco in origine destinato ai fans più incalliti della band, ma che ora come ora lo si trova in giro a prezzi stracciati, quindi un pensierino, se vi piace il metal melodico, fatecelo pure, in fondo c'è molto di peggio.
