L'essenza dei veri Sepultura capitanati da Max Cavalera.
Cosi posso riassumere questo "Under A Pale Gray Sky", che sebbene non manchi di emozionare non può fare a meno che infoderci un dubbio: perchè? Perchè pubblicarlo nel 2002, quando i Sepultura non erano più quelli che suonarono in queste registrazioni ?
Questa cosa ha tanto il sapore di operazione commerciale, o comunque pilotata, e mi resta il dubbio perchè in realtà non conosco la storia che sta all'origine di questa pubblicazione. So soltanto che si tratta del live registrato alla Brixton Academy di Londra nel dicembre 1996 dove, dopo l'esibizione, secondo la leggenda, nel back stage ci sarebbestata la classica goccia che fa traboccare il vaso ad incrinare ancora di più i rapporti già tesi all'interno del gruppo. Ma, superata questa considerazione, non resta che fare i conti con le passioni, e allora non mi interessa più di sapere, perchè per un vecchio fan questo disco non può fare altroche dare emozioni forti che ripercorrono tutta la carriera del gruppo nel suo decennio di maggiore splendore. Il decennio che va dagli inizi degli anni 80 di "Bestial Devastation" fino a "Roots".
In questo disco le canzoni sono suonate di cuore, e presumo senza nessun tipo di sovraincisione/tarocco, infatti è dotato di una grezzezza a tratti unica, e spesso alcune sbavature dovute all'esecuzione live si sentono senza impegnarsi eccessivamente in un ascolto minuzioso. Ma è proprio questo il suo punto di forza e la sua bellezza, e per il resto, c'è spazio a tutto quanto ha fatto il loro successo: impatto, ruvidità, possenza strumentale, canzoni thrash/death e sperimental/tribali, come solo loro hanno saputo fare. Ho apprezzato moltissimo l'esecuzione di canzoni "fucking old" quali "Necromancer" e "Troops Of Doom", decisamente molto riuscite rispetto alle originali, d'altronde i Sep non è che fossero mostri di tecnica all'epoca, e i loro mezzi erano scarsissimi. Mi ha lasciato invece un pò l'amaro in bocca il fatto che alcune canzoni terminano a metà o troncate per fare medley con altre tipo "Desperate Cry", ma per la qualità e l'emotività sono disposto ad accettare anche questo.
Un ottima istantanea di uno dei gruppi che ha fatto storia nel metal, a cui tutti i fan non possono mancare. Chissà come sarebbe stato vederli suonare davanti a te, a pochi metri, questo disco mi infonde nostalgia, e lo ascolto sempre con piacere in ricordo dei tempi che furono.
