La pubblicazione e le vendite del singolo "Don't You (Forget About Me)" avevano regalato alla band in alcuni mesi, più notorietà di quanto non ne avesse raggiunta in quasi dieci anni di attività. I riconoscimenti internazionali ottenuti, grazie alla freschezza musicale di quei due manifesti figli della new wave, che furono (e restano!) "New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84)" e "Sparkle in the Rain", avevano sì aperto le porte della notorietà al gruppo scozzese, ma che senza gli appetitosi ed energici "Alive and Kicking" e "Sanctify Yourself" a far da traino all'affascinante pomposità di "Once Upon a Time", probabilmente la storia di Jim Kerr & soci avrebbe potuto anche essere diversa.
La tournée di supporto al settimo album, iniziata al Mid Hudson Civic di Poughkeepsie (New York) supera le 140 date, dando modo ai Simple Minds di percorrere in lungo ed in largo U.S.A., Europa ma anche Giappone ed Australia con la conclusione del giro di concerti il 9 novembre 1986 al Western Springs ad Auckland in Nuova Zelanda. Bagni di folla garantiti per una musica ancor maggiormente destinata alle grandi masse che non perdendo in qualità, fa guadagnare all'ensemble scozzese lo stardom meritatamente conseguito.
Nel mese di maggio del 1987 è facile scorgere tra gli scaffali la prima coraggiosa prova live del gruppo, messa insieme proprio dalle esuberanti prestazione dell'ultimo world wide tour. E' facile scorgere il grande agio di cui la band è artefice sul palco, facendo delle esibizioni dal vivo una vera e propria celebrazione di quel rapporto unico che si crea tra pubblico e musicisti. Le frustate iniziali di "Ghostdancing" catapultano senza tanti complimenti in quel coinvolgimento di massa che non lascia indifferenti, e che brani raggianti come "Big Sleep" o "Book of Brilliant Things" tengono a mantenere costantemente alto. La riproposizione di autentici gioiellini come "Promised You a Miracle" e "Someone, Somewhere in Summertime" (che viene eccezionalmente preso dal concerto all'Entertainment di Sidney) fa di tutto per restare scolpita nell'immaginario collettivo. Gran bel medley quello che vede convivere il ripescaggio di "Love Song" (da "Sons and Fascination" del 1981) e "Dance to the Music" che insieme alla protest song "Sun City" danno vita ad uno dei momenti più infuocati dello show. Tra gli highlights "Don't You (Forget About Me)" ed "Alive and Kicking" che scaldano ed incantano lo Zenith di Parigi (la prevalenza dei brani è tratta dalle date del 12 e 13 agosto 1986), lasciando la chiusura dell'act a quell'avvolgente sogno dorato, in cui la rigogliosità di MacNeil (tastiere) e gli abbellimenti di Burchill (chitarra) fusi insieme alle oscure declamazioni di Kerr, ne fanno un anthem dalla potenzialità indiscussa.
Un doppio album che ripercorre la carriera del gruppo, favorendo i brani più recenti senza dimenticare i momenti del primo splendore a cui i fans di vecchia data sono sempre maggiormente attaccati. Poco più di ottanta minuti che lasciano sfogare attraverso gli speakers una musica che a molti potrà sembrare come preconfezionata, ma in cui ogni orecchio attento sarà in grado di percepirne la rimarchevole qualità quanto il fatale impatto che insieme risollevano le sorti di una decade immeritatamente ricordata quasi sempre per mascara e paillettes.
