Il primo album dei Sirenia, band formata da Morten Veland subito dopo essere stato lasciato dalla sua band precedente, i Tristania, è un vero capolavoro del gothic metal...
In questo CD, oltre a tutti gli elementi caratteristici del gothic metal (atmosfere cupe, cori, voci femminili, growl, voci maschili "pulite"..), troviamo anche numerosi effetti elettronici. Non possono poi mancare i violini, che in alcuni momenti duettano con le chitarre dando via a dei pezzi straordinari.
Le voci degli artisti sono molto belle: Fabienne si è rivelata una cantante adatta ai pezzi dei Sirenia e Morten ha migliorato ulteriormente il suo growl. Anche il suo metodo di comporre è migliorato (anche se dopo un album come "Beyond the Veil" è quasi impossibile migliorare..).
In questo album Morten, oltre a comporre, a cantare e a suonare la chitarra, suona anche tutti gli altri strumenti (ad eccezione dei violini)... gli altri componenti (il secondo chitarrista e il batterista) suonano solo nei live... L'album inizia con "Meridian", canzone molto incisiva dove non mancano cori, growl, violini e chitarre pesanti......bellissima la parte strumentale prima dei cori... a mio parere "Meridian" è la canzone migliore dell'album, perchè è energica e allo stesso tempo malinconica... si prosegue con "Sister Nightfall", una canzone molto bella ed energica il cui ritornello ti rimane in mente facilmente... la terza traccia, "On the Wane", è un altro capolavoro... in questa canzone non manca proprio nulla... infatti qui si possono trovare sia effetti elettronici che voci liriche, i quali sono contornati da bellissimi duetti tra chitarre e violini....il ritornello, con Morten che cambia voce in continuazione, è bellissimo.... dopo questa meravigliosa canzone, troviamo "In a Manica", canzone incisiva e abbastanza energica... degna di nota la fine con i cori e Morten che sussurra il ritornello... insomma, una canzone che merita... arriva dunque il momento della titletrack, una canzone particolare tutta da ascoltare.. infatti non ci sono parole per descriverla.... il testo è abbastanza macabro (infatti in un certo punto dice "I can feel the flames the fire lick me in vain"), la voce di Morten è più sull'aggressivo che sul dolce, i cori e gli effetti elettronici la rendono ancora più cupa, ma il pianoforte che c'è alla fine rasserena totalmente l'atmosfera...
E' il momento di "Lethargica", una canzone molto carina ed incisiva che non stanca mai nei suoi 6 minuti di lunghezza. Si arriva così all'altro capolavoro dell'album: "Manic Aeon"!!! Questa canzone è troppo bella!!! I cori sono bellissimi, così come i violini che, alternati alle chitarre, creano melodie magiche... il tutto contornato dalle meravigliose voci di Morten e di Fabienne che sembrano inseguirsi per tutta la durata della canzone!!! Si prosegue con "A shadow of your own self".... molto bello il ritornello cantato in growl!!!
L'album si conclude con la splendida ballata "In sumerian haze", a mio parere la ballata più bella che abbia mai sentito.... qui i violini si fanno sentire più che mai, suonando melodie dolci e malinconiche... la canzone è cantata interamente da Fabienne con Morten che sussurra...
insomma ragazzi... "At sixes and sevens" è davvero un CD bellissimo.... mi ricordo che all'inizio non mi piaceva molto ma, una volta capito, è un CD fantastico che ti regala tantissime emozioni!!!
