Questo "Thickskin" come molti sapranno fu il primo album senza Sebastian Bach alla voce, dato che decise di abbandonare la band a causa di vari scontri con gli altri membri del gruppo dopo la pubblicazione di "Subhuman Race". Il vuoto che lasciò Bach fu enorme, "frontman" come lui in giro se ne trovano davvero pochi. La band iniziò la ricerca del nuovo cantante e la scelte cadde su Johnny Solinger. Anche dietro la batteria ci fu un cambiamento, Rob Affuso fu sostituito da Phil Varone. "Thickskin" vide la luce nel 2003, a ben otto anni di distanza dall'ultimo album di inediti. Nonostante i cambi di formazioni, il disco è un buon disco. Nulla di nuovo, ma a distanza di anni si lascia ascoltare senza troppo pretese.
"Ghost" è sicuramente il pezzo forte dell'album, da piazzare a palla nello stereo. Ti si stampa in testa in modo impressionante ed è impossibile non provare a cantarla. Ottima la prova di Solinger, che non è Bach, ma dietro il microfono anche lui fa la sua figura. Per "Born A Begger" vale lo stesso discorso di "Ghost", ottimo il riff che accompagna il pezzo. "Thick is the Skin" versione "allungata" del titolo del disco, ci riporta indietro ai tempi di "Slave to the Grind", grande prova di tutta la band. "Lamb" è un altro pezzo da 90 dell'album. Suonerebbe alla grande anche in un "Slave to the Grind" o in "Subhuman Race". Grande prova di Solinger e strepitosi assoli del duo Dave "Snake" Sabo e Scott Hill, sempre impeccabili. Sono presenti anche due belle ballate, "One Light" e "See Yuo Around". Solinger si destreggia bene, ma in questo tipo di canzoni la mancanza di uno come Bach si sente eccome. Purtroppo e sottolineo PURTROPPO, il gruppo decide di "reinterpretare" un classico come "I Remember You" . Il risultato è imbarazzante, la canzone viene totalmente stravolta, Dal lento si passo ad una versione quasi punk, inascoltabile. L'unica traccia da "skippare" assolutamente, per non rovinare un capolavoro del genere.
In conclusione un album interessante, suonato senza la minima sbavatura. Probabilmente Sebastian Bach avrebbe dato un anima diversa disco, senza nulla togliere a Johnny Solinger,
