Genio e sregolatezza, sono i primi due sostantivi che mi vengono in mente per descrivere questo doppio dvd, ultima fatica di casa Slipknot.
Una produzione così sperimentale su video era stata fatta in precedenza solo dagli immensi ed intoccabili Pink Floyd. Un parto travagliato che doveva avvenire mesi e mesi fa, ma che solo ora abbiamo la possibilità di ammirare. Non aspettatevi il solito dvd musicale classico di un band, ma aspettatevi molto di più. Entrerete nei retroscena di uno dei gruppi più chiacchierati al mondo, con un vero e proprio film creato e diretto da M. Shawn Crahan: un viaggio immaginario, concettuale, psichedelico che ci racconta le fatiche dei nove dell'Iowa attraverso i 28 mesi di tour, 34 Stati girati e 233 shows svolti.
L'apertura del dvd è a mio avviso (che ho vissuto dal vivo vari concerti degli 'Knot) è da pelle d'oca. Ci troviamo con la telecamera puntata dal mixer luci verso il palco con tutto il pubblico ad aspettare l'entrata dei loro idoli. Una voce annuncia che però il concerto è stato annullato con forte disappunto dei presenti, ma dopo pochi secondi si spengono all'improvviso le luci e parte "Prelude 3.0" con il delirio assoluto del pubblico.
Sulle immagini scure provenienti da questa intro si leggono i nomi dei nove protagonisti: 8 Corey, 1 Joey, 7 Mick, 2 Paul, 5 Craig, 4 James, 3 Chris, 0 Sid, 6 Clown. L'idea portante e più geniale di tutto il "film" è che le scene sono state girate completamente con una camera a mano per farci sentire ancora più da vicino tutto il loro mondo, tra viaggi, retro-scena divertenti, preparazione dei concerti, sala prove, show, e varie chicche tra cui la ripresa in primo piano di Joey mentre esegue il suo famoso numero con la batteria che ruota in aria, e ad ogni membro un piccolo spazio interamente dicato che ce lo fa scoprire più nello specifico. Tutto questo nel primo disco.
Nel secondo troverete tutti i 5 video di "Vol 3: (The Subliminal Verses)", compreso "Vermilion Pt. 2", nove pezzi live presi da vari tour ma sopratutto nove interviste faccia a faccia con ogni membro della band per la prima volta a volto scoperto che raccontano a modo loro come "Slipknot" ha cambiato la loro vita, la filosofia del gruppo, le maschere, come vedono il mondo, i messaggi di rito ai fan e chi più ne ha più ne metta. L'unico difetto (parlando del disco 1) è che forse non piacerà ai nuovi conoscitori della band o a chi non li apprezza più di tanto visto che, come già detto, ci offre una visione particolare in un modo differente dal convenzionale del gruppo.
Comunque sia, è una produzione a mio avviso geniale, che di primo impatto sembra solo un'accozzaglia di immagini ma che proseguendo nella visione prende forma seguendo un ben preciso filo logico, senza toglierci però la possibilità di interpetare le immagini in modo soggettivo.
