"Keep on movin', don't stop"
La splendida voce di Victoria Wilson, quanti ricordi...
Erano gli ultimi anni di scuola superiore ed ero ancora alla ricerca di una mia identità musicale. I miei amici avevano già le idee chiare: c'erano i fondamentalisti rock (divisi nelle sotto-fazioni metal, classic e dark) i seguaci dell'electro-pop (A-Ha, Depeche Mode ecc. ), i "commerciali" e i pro-cantautori. Io ero indeciso, forse la musica in se stessa non mi interessava granchè.
Erano anche i tempi delle prime uscite domenicali in discoteca. Ovviamente ci si andava per un solo motivo e quel motivo non era la musica. Purtroppo però l'approccio con l'altro sesso (forse a causa del nostro aspetto tardo adolescenzial brufoloso?) non aveva molto successo e così capitava anche di essere concentrati su quello che usciva dalle casse. Una domenica di fine anni '80 il dj aprì la serata con "Back To Life" seguita da "Keep on movin'" e ne rimasi impressionato. Mi piaceva quel ritmo downtempo, un misto tra soul e dance e una meravigliosa parte vocale. Qualcosa di congeniale alle mie orecchie fino ad allora poco inclini a quei ritmi. E così, tramite un amico, riuscii ad avere una cassetta sulla quale erano registrati questi due singoli (si sentiva da cani, era tratta dalla radio). Dopo averla letteralmente consumata, nel 1990 mi procurai il vinile che li conteneva e cioè "Club classic volume one". E allora perchè prendere questo quarto volume da recensire? Perchè, col senno di poi, può essere a pieno titolo considerato la "Definitive Collection" dei Soul II Soul, visto che dal 1994 in poi non ci sono produzioni che val la pena menzionare. I fasti di questi pezzi e di altri successi come "Get a life", "Move me no mountain" e "Missing you" non sono stati più replicati. Nonostante la ricetta del successo e della particolarità di questo groove fosse relativamente semplice: una bella voce (Caron Wheeler su tutte o lo stesso Jazzie B) una drum machine o un batterista in carne ed ossa ed un ritmo 1/3 dance, 1/3 rap e 1/3 soul.
Un'indovinata alchimia sperimentata inizialmente nei party casalinghi e poi diventata fenomeno di costume e hit da classifica (solo in UK, naturalmente). Purtoppo, però, l'uscita di questa quarta raccolta è stata l'inizio della parabola discendente del gruppo. Per spiegarne i motivi è necessaria una premessa. Quando si parla di Soul II Soul, viene in mente solo Jazzie B, il cantante. Ma non tutti sanno che il vero cervello del "gruppo" è stato Nellee Hooper, in seguito diventato produttore (solo per citare i più importanti) dei primi album dei Massive Attack, di Post di Björk, di Bedtime Story di Madonna e di svariate canzoni degli U2. L'inizio della crisi creativa coincide con la dipartita di Nellee verso altri lidi. Anche se durata poco, l'epopea dei Soul II Soul ha lasciato ai "posteri" delle pietre miliari della musica black dance-oriented ed ha costituito, nello stesso ambito, un'importante fonte di ispirazione per le successive produzioni. Un classico.
