Gli Status Quo sono una delle più longeve rock band in circolazione, con all'attivo la bellezza di quasi trenta dischi in studio sono riusciti col tempo a costruire una carriera di tutto rispetto. Le origini risalenti all'ormai lontano 1962 come gruppo rock & roll e beat, poi la virata verso la psichedelia, quindi la decisa svolta della band verso un boogie rock semplice e diretto, genere del quale sono diventati veri e propri alfieri. Grande successo soprattutto in patria, gli Status Quo sono ancor oggi uno dei gruppi più amati in Inghilterra. Gran parte della fama di questa band deriva dalla loro straordinaria attitudine live, così come altri artisti e gruppi, i Quo davano il meglio sul palco. Non fu quindi un caso, né tantomeno un ripiego, se nel 1992 la famosa emittente inglese Radio One decise di festeggiare i suoi primi venticinque anni organizzando un grande concerto di cui furono protagonisti proprio gli Status Quo. L'evento si svolse al Sutton Park di Birmingham, al quale accorsero per l'occasione oltre centomila persone. Buona parte dello stesso show, sei brani, è stata usata per comporre questo live, il terzo ufficiale della band, mentre gli ultimi tre pezzi derivano invece da una precedente esibizione del 1990 allo stadio Wembley. Oltre al disco, uscito nel novembre 1992, fu pubblicato anche un vhs, contenente però solo le canzoni suonate a Birmingham.
In quell'occasione gli Status Quo dimostrarono ancora una volta di sapere bene cosa vuol dire tenere un grande live act ed offrirono una prova eccellente. La coppia di Telecaster di Francis Rossi e Rick Parfitt diede spettacolo, l'alchimia fra i due fu straordinaria, un guitar tandem che non teme confronti.
Una delle peculiarità del loro sound è infatti la capacità di dialogo fra i due chitarristi, degli intrecci ed un'intesa che possono ricordare, fatte le dovute differenze, quelli dei fratelli Young negli AC/DC, con Rossi nel ruolo di lead guitar e Parfitt alla ritmica, ma i due Quo sono anche i cantanti del gruppo e pure in quella veste si alternano magnificamente, ognuno dei due ha le idee ben chiare sul cosa fare e quando. Ottima anche la sezione ritmica composta dal bassista John Edwards e dal preciso e incisivo batterista Jeff Rich. A completare il quadro vi sono le tastiere e l'armonica suonate da Andy Bown. Un rock-blues potente, tendente all'hard, ma mai troppo cattivo, e sempre con un occhio di riguardo verso la melodia, scandito da ritmiche boogie ed impreziosito dalle ottime improvvisazioni di Rossi, una formula semplice, ma vincente, soprattutto dal vivo. Niente di pomposo, niente di superfluo, gli Status Quo sono una di quelle band in grado di metter su un intero disco con soli tre accordi.
Fin dall'opener, la famosissima "Whatever You Want", in una delle sue migliori versioni, si capisce che sarà il buon vecchio rock a farla da padrone. Anche se poi, subito dopo, arriva un momento di relativa calma, con la più pacata e melodica "In The Army Now". L'atmosfera da festa ritorna con la danzereccia e divertente "Burning Bridges". Poi è la volta di "Rockin' All Over The World", composta dal grande John Fogerty, ma portata al successo dagli Status Quo, che diedero al brano una nuova linfa vitale, facendolo di fatto proprio. Segue la cavalcata a briglie sciolte di "Caroline", rock'n'roll in Chuck Berry style. I brani si susseguono senza pause, con i consueti riff e tempi in quattro quarti. Il clou arriva col "Roadhouse Medley", venti minuti di puro godimento; il gruppo rispolvera il vecchio classico dei Doors e ci inserisce dentro un bel po' di altri brani, sia propri sia cover e citazioni, come ad esempio la nota "The Wanderer", e realizzano un medley epico. Grande prova canora di Parfitt, mentre Rossi dà il meglio di se sfoderando assoli che brillano per inventiva e gusto melodico. L'armonica di Bown conferisce al tutto la giusta atmosfera blues. La stessa traccia in versione single edit sarà poi aggiunta come bonus nel cd rimasterizzato. Si chiude qui la prima parte, i restanti tre pezzi - il funk rock "Don't Drive My Car", l'anthem boogie "Hold You Back" e il rock and roll puro di "Little Lady" - come già detto, arrivano da Wembley 1990 e non fanno altro che confermare quanto già ascoltato, con un'altra straordinaria cornice di pubblico che, a giudicare da urla e applausi, sembra veramente gradire la performance della band inglese nella capitale.
Insomma, un disco live più che apprezzabile, a tratti sorprendente, musica coinvolgente e vitale che svolge bene il suo compito, cioè del sano e semplice intrattenimento a base di rock and roll. Sicuramente molto meglio di tanti altri album dal vivo di musicisti dai nomi ben più famosi. Gli Status Quo quando c'è da suonare e darci dentro non deludono, sono una garanzia, una di quelle band che ha fatto dei palchi di mezzo mondo la propria casa. Il loro rock basilare, fatto di montagne di riff e sudore, forse non sarà di valore artistico elevato, forse niente di particolarmente memorabile o storico, ma in fondo, chissenefrega, come cantavano gli Stones, it's Only Rock and Roll, but I like It.
