Immagino abbiate capito che ho una venerazione per gli Stratovarius, ma quello che sto per recensire, il loro debutto discografico, l'omonimo "Fright night" si stacca un pò dalle altre loro fatiche.
La produzione è pessima, la tastiera è convincente solo nelle introduzioni della titletrack e di "Darkness", che è a mio giudizio la migliore del disco e la chitarra di Tolkki troppo bassa, senza contare che all'epoca era lui a occuparsi del cantato: di certo la sua voce, almeno in questo album, non è neanche lontanamente paragonabile a quella dolce e melodica del loro singer successivo, Timo Kotipelto, anzi risulta piuttosto aggressiva e graffiante. Anche i testi risultano decisamente banali rispetto ai successivi lavori, tra cui il favoloso "Vision".
Tutto sommato un album frettoloso, ma non da buttar via, che invito comunque ad ascoltare, giusto per farsi un idea sulle origini della band.
