Per chi crede che il nu metal abbia ancora qualcosa da dire. I Taproot, a parere del sottoscritto un gruppo ingiustamente sottovalutato, escono fuori nel 2000, in pieno caos nu-metal, con l'ottimo "Gift", un album fortemente ispirato dai Deftones e leggermente appesantito dalle ormai famose sfuriate di scuola KoRn, ipnotico, interessante, che riscosse un discreto successo (ma non troppo), grazie soprattutto alla camaleontica voce di Stephen Richards. Nel 2002 esce "Welcome" ed i nostri purtroppo incappano in un flop clamoroso: le sfuriate e le ritmiche psicotiche scompaiono per lasciare spazio a sonorità grunge e, ovviamente, ad un uso eccessivo della melodia, che purtroppo rende l'album noioso e poco coinvolgente (eccezion fatta per il singolo "Poem"). "Blue-Sky Research", uscito l'anno scorso, non è solo l'album del riscatto per la band dopo il mediocre precedessore, ma anche la testimonianza della finalmente raggiunta maturità dei Taproot, che si spogliano di tutti i clichè nu metal presenti in "Gift" (riff riabbassati stoppati, strofe rappate, scream vocals incazzate) e di quella malinconia grungiaiola (modello ultimi Staind) di cui era impregnato "Welcome". Infatti la nuova musica del quartetto è un qualcosa di "nuovo", un qualcosa dove serenità e malinconia si amalgamano alla perfezione in un concentrato di grunge, rock e antiche reminescenze deftoniane (con addirittura venature emo), spogliato di quella pesantezza che aveva penalizzato il precedente disco, che crea atmosfere leggere, dolci, raffinate, che non stancano mai, come appunto un bel cielo azzurro durante un pomeriggio d'autunno.
E sì, perchè è proprio questa l'immagine che esce fuori durante l'ascolto dell'album, è la colonna sonora di un'intera giornata di inizio autunno vissuta dalle luci dell'alba fino al tramonto, il tutto al cospetto di un onnipresente cielo azzurro (tipo quello presente sulla copertina). "I Will Not Fall For You", incipit dell'album, si apre con un delicato arpeggio di chitarra accompagnato da un Richards tranquillo che sfoga tutta la sua rabbia nel ritornello; sarebbe inutile parlare di ogni traccia presente, visto che le melodie di canzoni come "Violent Seas" "Lost In The Woods" "April Suits" "She" "Promise" e l'orecchabile singolo "Calling" sono solo da ascoltare e riascoltare. "Facepeeler" "So Eager" "Nightmare" e soprattutto "Blue Sky Research/What's Left" sono forse le canzoni che presentano, oltre all'onnipresente melodia, pure momenti più rabbiosi, come a voler ricordare le sfuriate di "Gift", ormai lontanissime anni luce. Nota a parte per "Birthday", che fu la prima canzone che mi colpì veramente di questo disco: melodia e atmosfera a dir poco stupende, un pezzo emozionante con un testo molto romantico... un bellissimo augurio di buon compleanno.
Alla realizzazione di questo album, oltre agli stessi Taproot e al produttore Bob Marlette, ha partecipato pure l'ex Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan, che ha firmato i brani "Violent Seas" "Lost In The Woods" e "Promise". "Blue Sky Research" ci regala finalmente una band matura, con una sua identità, più serena che mai, lontana dai soliti clichè del suo genere di origine, ma ancora appartenente ad esso, nonostante le marcate inclinazioni grunge dimostrate in passato. ll nu metal dei Taproot si è evoluto ed è finalmente esploso, e di questo non posso che esserne contento. Dopo la rabbia di "Gift" e la malinconia di "Welcome", ecco la serenità di "Blue Sky Research". Un album consigliato per chi ama sognare, per chi è alla ricerca di un cielo azzurro.
