Con il geniale intro di "Her Against me", Dulli ci presenta il suo nuovo figlio meticcio, figlio di un bianco, il signor Rock Alternativo, e una donna nera, la signora Soul che mettendo alla luce il loro caro "Congregation" si rivelano dei bravi genitori.
Le canzoni dell'album rispecchiano l'intenso cammino stilistico che Dulli sta affrontando, mischiando più generi (come fece David Byrne con i Talking Heads in "Fear of Music") e riuscendo nella sua missione alla perfezione.
I riff molto lavorati di chitarra denotano un lungo lavoro di stesura per composizione delle canzone che sono ormai lontane dall'impeto aggressivo di "Up in it" album frettoloso e più diretto e "post-grunge era".
Con canzoni come "I'm her slave"; "Conjure me" o la stupenda "This is my confession" l'album manda le sue truppe d'assalto ed a battaglia finita ci delizia con pezzi come "Tonight"; "Let me lie to you" e l'untitled track che si nasconde nella dodicesima traccia dell'album, ma che si rivela essere una canzone degna di essere messa ai primi posti nella tracklist.
La sorpresa è di sicuro la cover di "The Temple" canzone presa dal famosissimo musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" e che, reinterpretata dal gruppo prende un'enfasi maggiore, anche se Dulli resta fedele all'originale, suonando alla perfezione di giri di chitarra e giocando con gli Alti e Bassi della canzone che mette a dura prova la sua resistenza vocale.
Anche se la critica ha preferito "Gentleman" come migior album degli Afghan, io consiglio "Congregation" perchè album come questo, nella storia della musica non sono mai stati replicati, e lo ritengo degno dunque delle 5 stelline di voto.
