Il Regno Unito e la musica Rock. Su questo argomento potremmo dedicare ore e ore di discussione, per non parlare di quanto inchiostro usare per descrivere quello che è a tutti gli effetti un connubio perfetto. Di materiale c'è né in abbondanza. E soprattutto per ogni palato. Mi sembra superfluo citare ancora una volta le band e gli artisti che hanno reso grande questo genere, bensì mi fa piacere che nella scena musicale mondiale si affacci un gruppo nuovo di zecca proveniente proprio da queste terre. Precisamente questa volta si tratta dell'Irlanda Del Nord.
I The Answer, potrebbero essere davvero la risposta a tutti gli orfani di rock, che sono costretti oggigiorno a sorbirsi una sequela di band più o meno rock, più o meno commerciali, ma dal talento discutibile. Nel 2000 si forma questa band, dai gusti spiccatamente vintage (vengono subito in mente Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Crowes e persino qualche accenno di Southern Rock), il loro primo cd (questo “Rise” per l'appunto) arriva solo nel 2006, ma già negli anni precedenti questa band inizia a far parlare di sé. Nel 2005 infatti la prestigiosa rivista “Classic Rock” (considerata quasi un vangelo del buon rock) la elegge “Best New Band of the 2005”, e i Deep Purple li vogliono per aprire qualche data del tour britannico. Un ottimo biglietto da visita, anche se la prova del nove si chiama “Rise”.
Il loro debut album è un insieme di tutte le loro influenze musicali, miscelate con sapienza, evitando accuratamente il plagio e mettendoci dentro un po' di originalità. E' impossibile infatti non pensare quanto i Led Zeppelin siano stati importati per questi ragazzi, anche perchè il cantante del gruppo ricorda in modo evidente lo stesso Plant. Cormac Neeson è il vero valore aggiunto di questo gruppo cantando molto bene in ogni traccia. Il singolo “Never Too Late” è una grande canzone hardrock che ha avuto molta fortuna (oltre ad aver venduto bene, la canzone fa parte del noto gioco Guitar Hero), “Memphis Water” è un blues rock di classe, e la traccia d'apertura “Under The Sky” è perfetta per far capire di che gruppo si tratta. Tutto questo nella prima parte del cd. Il cd prosegue bene senza picchi di eccellenza, ma con una qualità generale più che buona. Lo skip sembra essere scongiurato in questo cd, dove non si registrano particolari filler. Il cd si chiude con la ballata Always on my mind, chiaro esempio di una canzone dai toni più rilassanti senza però cadere nella meliosità. Giunti al termine, si ha l'impressione di trovarsi di fronte ad una band con le palle, una band che sa quello che fa e che è in grado di emozionare con un rock diretto e senza compromessi.
Questo non è un album che entrerà nella storia del rock. Fondamentalmente i The Answer non hanno rivoluzionato nulla né tantomeno hanno portato a cambiare un genere già di per sé contaminato da mille derivazioni. Hanno cercato di riportare in auge un genere ormai morto e sepolto. Il cd ha venduto discretamente e i Live hanno ottenuto sempre ottimi feedback. La band è in salute e lo dimostrano i successivi episodi discografici. A differenza dei The Darkness, esplosi rapidamente come eroi “VintageRock” eppoi scoppiati come una bolla di sapone, questo gruppo sembra avere idee chiare e spalle larghe per evitare di ripetere certi errori tipici di band neofite. La ricerca della commercialità non sembra essere infatti nelle idee future della band, fedele al loro personale stile. Uno stile che ha dato grosse soddisfazioni. In questo senso come non essere fieri di fare da spalle al gigantesco tour degli Acdc? Ebbene sì questi ragazzotti irlandesi hanno aperto la maggior parte delle date del gruppo australiano, riscuotendo sempre un gran quantitativo di applausi.
