Non pare di vederli questi giovanissimi Beatles sotto il soffitto basso del Cavern agitarsi ed agitare i ragazzi ai piedi del piccolo palco? “One, two, three, four” e via con "I saw er standing there”, il rock’n’roll che padri del rock’n’roll (Elvis, Jerry Lee e Chuck in testa) non erano mai stati in grado di scrivere… Il primo album di questi ragazzini che da un po’ stavano facendosi notare in giro per il paese, il produttore George Martin (personaggio fondamentale nella musica dei Beatles) l’aveva proprio voluto così: la fotografia su disco di una tipica esibizione del quartetto.
Pezzi originali (“Misery” “Ask Me Why” “Please Please Me”, primo singolo a piazzarsi nei Top Five, “Love Me Do”, un onorevole 17° posto alla sua uscita…) e cover “inevitabili” per quel periodo (“Anna”, “Chains”, “Boys” “Baby it’s you” di Burt Bacharach…). Infine una chiusura esplosiva con la celeberrima “Twist And Shout” che divenne talmente famosa in questa versione da far dimenticare il fatto che si trattasse, anch’essa, di una cover. Proprio questo brano fu inciso alla fine dell’unica lunghissima sessione di registrazione dell’11 giugno durante la quale era stato registrato tutto l’album e dato che Lennon, influenzato, era ormai senza voce, l'unico modo per cantarla era urlarla a squarciagola. A George Martin andò benissimo così.
“Please Please Me” è tutto qui: in questi veloci 14 pezzi. Un grande album forse no, forse un album come tanti di quel periodo, ma il bello doveva ancora arrivare e nessuno, veramente nessuno, in quel momento poteva immaginare cosa sarebbe successo di lì a poco.

Chi l'avrebbe mai detto che la Leggenda, forse la più grande della Storia della Musica, sarebbe iniziata con un semplicissimo, banalissimo, economicissimo: ONE, TWO, THREE, FAH!
