Registrate tra il 1966 ed il 1967, "Strawberry Fields Forever" e "Penny Lane" sono 2 delle canzoni più significative, influenti, particolari e belle dei Beatles. In origine, le 2 canzoni dovevano far parte dell'album "Sgt. Pepper", ma, essendo già uscite come singolo, si decise di non inserirle nel disco. "Strawberry Fields Forever" si ispira all'orfanotrofio Strawberry Fields, dietro il quale c'è un giardino dove Lennon(l'autore della canzone) andava a giocare da piccolo. "Penny Lane", invece, prende il nome dall'omonima via di Liverpool. Entrambi i luoghi erano citati nella prima versione del testo di "In My Life". Mettendo le 2 canzoni a confronto, si possono notare le varie differenze fra il modo di scrivere e comporre di John e quello di Paul.
"Strawberry Fields Forever" è il perfetto esempio di un tipico testo di Lennon, filosofico, criptico e nostalgico, e musicalmente unisce tradizione (grazie al l'orchestra) e psichedelica.
"Penny Lane", d'altro canto, rappresenta un tipico testo di McCartney, tranquillo ed ottimista anche se ugualmente nostalgico e richiamante il passato. Musicalmente, unisce anch'esso tradizione (i fiati) ed innovazione.
Il singolo, uscito come "doppio lato A" (formato ideato dagli stessi Beatles, con il singolo "Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out", ottenne un grande successo commerciale, e venne considerato da George Martin come il miglior singolo mai pubblicato dal gruppo.
Le 2 canzoni sono la perfetta unione tra passato, presente e futuro, tra tranquillità e nostalgia, tra l'amore per i luoghi del passato ed il guardare verso il futuro chiedendosi cosa succederà.
