Nel Marzo del 1967 i Doors erano ancora una band poco conosciuta al grande pubblico. Era da poco uscito il loro splendido album d'esordio, ma non ancora il secondo singolo "Light My Fire", che sarà poi quello che li proietterà nei primi posti delle classifiche americane facendo di loro delle rock star. In questo contesto la band di Jim Morrison si esibì un paio di serate, sette e dieci marzo, al Matrix di San Francisco, un piccolo night club di propietà dei Jefferson Airplane. I quattro set, due per serata, si svolsero dinanzi a ben pochi spetttori ma, evidentemente, ben attrezzati, ed infatti per anni le registrazioni di questi concerti sono circolate come bootleg. La casa discografica dei Doors, l'Elektra, acquistò quei nastri fin da subito, ma per vedere pubblicata la prima release ufficiale si è dovuto aspettare ben quarant'anni, quando, nel 2008, la Rhino Records\Bright Midnight Archives ha deciso di rimasterizzare il materiale a disposizione e realizzare questo ottimo live.
Live At The Matrix '67 è sicuramente uno dei prodotti più interessanti della discografia postuma dei Doors, in quanto ci presenta una band agli esordi, a metà strada fra il blues e la psichedelia, fresca e vitale, in piena fase creativa, libera di sperimentare ed improvvisare a piacimento, senza pressioni ed ancora al riparo dal peso della celebrità. Il live si presenta decisamente corposo, con i suoi due cd, per oltre due ore di musica, che raccolgono il meglio di quelle esibizioni. Il set è in gran parte basato sul primo, leggendario album, e sui brani che costituiranno l'ossatura del successivo Strange Days, al quale i Doors stavano lavorando in quei mesi, ma anche un paio di pezzi che poi finiranno in L.A. Woman ("Crawling King Snake") ed in Waiting For The Sun ("Summer's Almost Gone").
Si comincia con quello che all'epoca era il loro primo ed unico singolo, la cattiva e trascinante "Break On Through", con un Morrison a dir poco rabbioso e John Densmore che picchia sui piatti come un dannato. Le esibizioni sono veramente ottime, la voce di Jim, ipnotica e potente come non mai, raggiunge il massimo di espressività nelle interpretazioni epiche di "Moonlight Drive", "Back Door Man", "When The Music's Over" e "The End", che coi suoi quattordici minuti di delirio psichedelico si innalza a perla assoluta del disco. Bellissimo l'assolo di Krieger in "Light My Fire", che viene riproposta senza la classica introduzione di organo, in una veste decisamente più grezza di quella in studio, ma altrettanto convincente. Ancora meglio fa Manzarek in "The Crystal Ship", con passaggi di rara bellezza. Tanti altri i classici in scaletta, mi limito a citare le splendide interpretazioni di "Soul Kitchen", "Alabama Song" e "People Are Strange". Mentre invece le cover "Close To You" di Willie Dixon, "Who Do You Love" di Bo Diddley, e "Money" sono episodi che riportano i Doors alle origini Blues. Si chiude con la celebre "Gloria" di Van Morrison, forse una delle canzoni più coverizzate di sempre. Insomma, con una track list del genere, ben ventiquattro pezzi in totale, citarli tutti sarebbe impossibile ma, sicuramente, nessuno potrà rimanere deluso da tanta abbondanza, specialmente coloro che, come me, sono più legati ai primi due album della band.
La qualità della registrazione è buona, non ottima, ma sicuramente meglio dei vari bootleg, uno dei quali è stato anche qui recensito. Entrando più nello specifico, direi che voce, organo e batteria vengono fuori bene, molto nitidi, mentre invece la chitarra e la linea di basso, suonata dallo stesso Manzarek col suo Rhodes piano, risultano a tratti essere in minor evidenza, un po' coperti dagli altri strumenti. Questa, insieme al fatto che la presenza del pubblico è quasi impercettibile, a parte qualche raro applauso, è probabilmente l'unica pecca di un live che altrimenti sarebbe stato perfetto. Il disco, nel complesso, è comunque superbo e la prestazione offerta dai quattro è da brivido. Il gruppo riesce a suonare i propri brani in maniera impeccabile, certo in forma più scarna, meno elaborata, ma con grande vigore, e pieni zeppi di passaggi inediti, versi aggiunti, improvvisati sul momento, interventi strumentali che strizzano l'occhio alla jam, ma senza perdersi troppo in virtuosismi. Jim è come di consueto istrionico ma, allo stesso tempo, incredibilmente lucido, non sbaglia niente ed è ancora lontano da quello che verrà dopo, dall'icona imprigionata nella sua stessa gloria che farà fatica anche solo a completarli i concerti. Densmore è preciso ed incisivo, i suoi fills, di base blues e attitudine jazz, restano fra i più apprezzati ed imitati di sempre. Le atmosfere oniriche create da Manzarek ed i raffinati arpeggi di Krieger completano il tutto alla perfezione. In poche parole, i Doors al massimo della forma.
Assistere di persona a quei concerti deve essere stata, per i pochi presenti, un'esperienza indimenticabile. Se il primo classico disco dal vivo dei Doors, Absolutely Live, pur essendo ottimo, era comunque risultato di più performance raccolte in periodi e posti diversi e poi assemblate insieme, questo Live At The Matrix invece è un prodotto decisamente più omogeneo e direi anche più genuino, in quanto fotografa esattamente la band in un momento ben preciso e definito. Qui vi è forse l'essenza più pura dei Doors, vale la pena darci un ascolto.
