Seppur molti degli inguaribili sostenitori di Mark Knopfler avrebbero preferito vedere il proprio idolo impegnarsi maggiormente per la pubblicazione di qualche disco in più con quella band che gli ha permesso di affermarsi come artista completo, non si può non prendere atto che quando si parla del fondatore dei Dire Straits, si abbia la netta sensazione di avere a che fare con un musicista dalla personalità sicura e determinata. Un artista che segue ostinatamente il fiuto del proprio percorso cedendo ben poche volte alle necessità del marketing (come per il rarissimo "Live in U.S.A." del '79 e la raccolta "Money For Nothing" a nome Dire Straits, ma mettiamoci anche la collaborazione per "Gaucho" degli Steely Dan nel 1980), sostenendo e tutelando prioritariamente quella non comune crescita professionale di cui si è reso artefice.
E' in quest'ottica che deve essere vista la collaborazione tra Knopfler, Brendan Crocker, Steve Phillips e Guy Fletcher, quattro musicisti accomunati sì da una pregressa amicizia e collaborazioni di vecchia data (The Duolian String Pickers il duo formato proprio da Knopfler e Phillips risale al finire degli anni ‘60), ma anche dalla volontà di dare vita alla realizzazione di un disco di musica country con capacità di penetrazione anche tra quel pubblico incline all'ascolto della musica rock, sotto l'omofonica denominazione di The Notting Hillbillies.
La copertina in cui i quattro protagonisti sono ritratti in perfetto ordine di altezza ognuno in compagnia del proprio dobro, comunica mettendo subito in chiaro cosa aspettarsi dal disco: country music o meglio un vero atto di riverenza verso quei suoni distintivi di quella tradizione americana che ha le proprie basi tra rockabilly, roots, bluegrass e rock ‘n' roll.
Considerata l'uniformità dell'album un track by track sarebbe superfluo, come ingiusto non menzionare la validità di "That's Where I Belong" di Crocker, il cui sapore messicano del sound si diluisce con la gentilezza del country, mentre la coinvolgente "Will You Miss Me" scritta e interpretata da Phillips, ci trascina in sonorità meno rurali e più vicine ad un'inclinazione pop, complice un cantato dall'appeal vincente. Il tormento di "Blues Stay Away From Me" (già coverizzata da Gene Vincent And the Blue Caps e The Everly Brothers) ben riesce a diffondere la tristezza della disillusione verso l'amore a seguito di un'improvvisa delusione, mentre la tradizione richiamata con "Please Baby" sciorina lo stato di agiatezza in cui i quattro hillbillies si muovono nel dissodamento delle lande del country-blues più puro. L'unico brano composto da Knopfler è "Your Own Sweet Way" (per ovvie ragioni scelto come singolo apripista all'album) che da modo al leader dei Dire Straits di cimentarsi in un raffinatissimo blues vellutato, in cui voce e chitarra sono protagonisti inscindibili.
E' il primo disco che permette a Mark Knopfler - presente e riconoscibile pressoché in tutti i brani -, di trovarsi in una band che non siano i Dire Straits, ove l'equanime combinazione tra nuovi ed apprezzabili brani e traditionals riesce a far immedesimare l'ascoltatore in questa galoppata elettro-acustica, attraverso quei luoghi comuni che provocano un senso di intimo piacere a chi non disdegna le sfuocate ed affascinanti ambientazioni da lontano west, fatte anche di sudore e fatica.
"Missing...Presumed Having A Good Time": per gli amanti del genere un album di spessore, per tutti gli altri un ottimo tonico per mente e cuore in un mondo fatto di sontuosa banalità, dove però c'è ancora spazio per l'apprezzamento della genuina bellezza che suggerisce sempre dove guardare.
