"Gish" è l'eccellente e sottovalutato esordio degli Smashing Pumpkins datato 1991 (un vero anno di grazia!). Un successo iniziale che, come + volte riscontrato da altre valide band del periodo, è stato oscurato dal secondo equivalente e folgorante "Nevermind" dei Nirvana appunto.
"Gish" prende il titolo dal cognome della famosa attrice del cinema muto Lilian Gish che Corgan aveva sentito nominare da sua nonna. L'album è evidentissimamente figlio del sound 70s tra cui Black Sabbath e Led Zeppelin sia della scena alternative che si stava creando a fine anni 80. Il sound e i testi non ancora completamente maturi, profumano di antico, triste, secco e primordiale nel senso + dolce e rabbioso. Lo stile dei Pumpkins si intuisce sin dagli esordi e verrà confermato in modo + sognante in Siamese Dream fino a toccare il picco + alto nel monumentale Mellon Collie!
L'album si apre con la diretta I am one, singolo su 45 giri targato SUB POP, poi si scalpita con la psichedelica Siva brano da ascoltare e ancora riascoltare per passare alla malinconica Rhinocerous con un video girato in un noto parco londinese, video sognante e surreale quanto quello del primo singolo Siva, con un altrettanto Corgan capellone tra vasche di acqua rosa shocking, fiori gallegianti e chiome ribelli biondo platino della storica bassista D'Arcy e strabilianti e secche rullate di batteria e schitarrate rispettivamente di Chamberlin e Iha. Segue una rovente Bury me con un sound accattivante tra l'acido e il marziano. Crush è languida e trascinante ma nel contesto compatta, si continua con altre robuste sferzate tra Suffer e Snail per catapultarsi in pochissimi minuti in un altro potenziale singolo: Tristessa, coinvolgente caldo e roccheggiante. Windowpaine è solo un finale e splendido accenno di quella melodia sognante che avrebbe poi caratterizzato le Zucche a seguire, in Daydream invece, un titolo che sembra un omaggio a "Daydream Nation" dei Sonic Youth tanto quanto la candela nel video di Siva sembra ricordare la copertina del capolavoro datato 1988, il cantato di grande impatto è di D'Arcy, peccato poter in seguito ascoltare la sua voce solo in un accenno in Mellon Collie. Il finale del brano si chiude con un'eco dell'onnipresente Corgan in cui dice "Sto diventando pazzo!" Il tutto è diretto dal leggendario Butch Vig che acquisterà sempre + credibilità cn Nirvana ovviamente, Sonic Youth, L7, e ancora Smashing Pumpkins fino a formare un suo gruppo i Garbage.
Nel complesso a mio parere un lavoro eccellente, assolutamente primordiale... in questi desolati anni 2000 non sono riuscito a trovare ancora un disco d'esordio che mi trasmetta la stessa passione combinata con equal qualità dei brani.. ma sento che accadrà, è troppo tempo che la musica è intrappolata in questa attuale staticità!
