I Three Days Grace sono:

Beh, sono molto felice di poter essere il primo a provare a recensire questo disco e nella fattispecie questa band. Loro sono i Three Days Grace, formatisi a Norwood nell’Ontario, in Canada, nel 1992, prima con lo pseudonimo di Groundswell, poi, una volta trasferitisi a Toronto nel 1997, con quello definitivo ed attuale.
Questo è il loro secondo album, il seguito del self-titled del 2003 “Three Days Grace”, bel disco, che già sprizzava talento da ogni nota ma che dava ancora quel sensore di acerbità, che è normale cosa per il primo lavoro di un gruppo emergente come loro. "One-X" è a mio parere davvero un ottimo lavoro, che dà quella conferma che ci si aspettava, ovvero il salto di qualità, la maturità artistica che era già tre anni fà ovvio che dovesse arrivare. Le canzoni sono più cattive ma lasciano spazio anche alla melodia, le chitarre suonano a meraviglia in simbiosi con la batteria e la bella voce rock di Adam Gontier, frontman del gruppo. Il suo timbro ricorda vagamente quello di Kurt Cobain ma ha tutto un suo carattere, dando alle parole cantate l’effetto che si meritano.
L’album si apre con la prima traccia “It’s All Over”, la musica inizia con il lento e lontano stridere della chitarra di Barry Stock, che si fa sentire subito con un suono potente che caratterizza tutto il pezzo, segue “Pain”, secondo singolo estratto dall’album, dove i riff potenti delle chitarre si alternano ad un melodico pizzicato che accompagna il canto di Gontier, che in questi tratti ricorda la voce di Lauri Ylonen, frontman dei “The Rasmus”. Il terzo pezzo corrisponde al primo singolo estratto “Animal I Have Become”, a mio avviso il pezzo meno rilevante, dato il testo molto monotono e scarno, dove Gontier non fa altro che ripetere di avere un animale dentro che lo ossessiona. Molto apprezzabile il basso di Brad Walst nelle prime note, che, per il suo predominare, ricorda il loro singolo d’esordio “I Hate Everything About You”. Si va avanti con “Never Too Late”, che dà il via al vero album; non che prima non ci fosse qualità ma a mio avviso da questo pezzo in poi, spiccano i veri progressi fatti da Gontier e compagni. Il pezzo che si apre con la chitarra acustica, sfocia poi nei riff potenti di entrambe le chitarre elettriche, che lungo il cammino, si intrecciano con le acustiche e l’ottima batteria di Neil Sanderson, dando vita ad un sound stupendo. “On My Own” rallenta il ritmo ma non completamente, le chitarre con il loro suono a “singhiozzo”, scuotono i ritornelli. “Riot” ci dà la sveglia, aprendosi con suoni metal come tappeto alla voce di Gontier, per poi sfociare in riff potenti sul breve ritornello. “Get Out Alive” ha uno stampo “ballad”, anche se la cosa è in parte smentita dal solito carattere rock, soprattutto verso la fine dove c’è un’esplosione che non farebbe star fermo nemmeno un sasso! Avanti forte con “Let It Die” che si apre melodicamente con la bella voce del cantante, che si alterna a riff energici e chitarra acustica, poi “Over & Over” arricchita da un sottofondo di archi che qua è là accompagnano la voce. Questo è la vera ballad, pezzo molto melodico. “Time Of Dyng” ci riporta sulla retta via, Gontier si scatena, la sua voce rauca accompagna un altro bel pezzo rock/metal. Alla penultima posizione, “Gone Forever” che in alcuni frammenti ricorda alcuni pezzi dei Good Charlotte, per quanto riguarda alcuni pezzi corali. Nulla che lo faccia scadere, anche perché la musica è grintosa e splendidamente eseguita come al solito. L’ultimo pezzo, che da anche il nome all’album è “One-X”, chiude degnamente l’opera. Iniziando con un suggestivo e lento brusio creato da rullante e grancassa, sfocia nel solito bel alternarsi di chitarre energiche, che sembrano fare da sfondo a quella che ritengo una delle più belle voci rock attualmente in circolazione. Qui pioveranno le critiche (e non solo qui) ma credo davvero che Gontier abbia una voce importante, senza di essa il disco non avrebbe questa qualità.
In conclusione, credo di aver già dimostrato ampiamente il mio pensiero riguardo questo lavoro, che ritengo davvero ottimo. Lo sto ascoltando da giorni in auto ed a casa (a lavoro non posso purtroppo) e sono sempre più convinto che i quattro ragazzi di Norwood ci faranno ancora parlare di loro in questi termini. Nel panorama rock attuale, purtroppo la qualità spesso viene a mancare e tutto diventa troppo commerciale e fa rabbia, pensare che gruppi come i Three Days Grace siano così poco conosciuti in Italia (e forse anche in Europa).
La cosa peggiore è che anche volendo, a meno che non si abbia la fortuna di farsi un bel viaggio di un mese negli States, non sarà possibile sentire questo gruppo dal vivo nel Belpaese... chissà magari un domani. Speriamo di non essere talmente avanti con gli anni da non poterli sentire!
