Dopo tre anni di silenzio dalla pubblicazione dell'album omonimo, ecco il ritorno dei canadesi da Norwood, Three Days Grace sul mercato con il nuovo disco "One-X".
In questi anni il gruppo ha condotto un intensa attività on the road tenendo molti concerti cercando di ampliare la propria base di fan. C'è stata anche una new-entry nella line-up che ha visto l'ingresso di Barry Stock come lead guitarist a supporto del frontman e chitarrista Adam Gontier.
Da notare come due canzoni contenute in questo disco ("Animal i have become" e "Riot") siano state inserite nella colonna sonora del gioco di wrestling Smackdown vs Raw 2007.
Il disco prosegue quanto di buono la band ci aveva fatto vedere con il precedente lavoro, con canzoni dalla struttura semplice, ma che sanno emozionare subito l'ascoltare. Pur percorrendo ancora la strada del predecessore e cioè quella del rock/metal "One-X" risulta leggermente più maturo del precedente, riuscendo a miscelare pezzi più melodici e lenti a componimenti in cui le chitarre potenti e distorte e la voce rauca e energica di Gontier la fanno da padrona. Sfortunatamente si nota una poca taratura della scaletta del disco e della disposizione delle tracce in quanto i pezzi più potenti sono inseriti nella prima parte del disco privandoci successivamente dell'adrenalina e facendo spazio successivamente a canzoni più melodiche, ma adrenalina che poi ritorna a scorrere a fiumi verso le parti finali.
Ma adesso scomponiamo il disco e analizziamolo al microscopio.
Apre le danze "It's all over" che dopo un intro guidato dalle sole chitarre esplode la sua energia nel bel ritornello e qui compare anche il primo assolo di chitarra abbastanza lungo e pulito, elemento di novità vista la quasi totale assenza nel self/titled. Si prosegue con "Pain" strofa abbastanza tranquilla guidata da arpeggi dolci di chitarra che pero contrasta con la carica del refrain. Avanti con "Animal i have become" primo singolo e anche una delle migliori canzoni dell'album , con un intro di basso che a sua volte scandisce alla perfezione il tempo e caratterizza il pezzo. Posizione numero quattro per la più rilassata "Never too late" che vede l'utilizzo della chitarra acustica sarà anche uno dei singoli del platter.
Ci incamminiamo verso le parti centrali dell'album con la successiva "On my own" che si distingue per il ritmo spezzato che viene creato dalle chitarre e "Riot" pezzo arrabbiatissimo, in cui emerge tutta la carica metal. Ma le novità arrivano con "Get out alive" e "Over 'n over" che si distaccano dal resto dell'album per la loro natura tranquilla, insomma due ballads. Mentre la prima è per due terzi molto tranquilla e dolce e che per struttura può ricordare "Take me under" altra loro canzone inserita nel primo album, "Over 'n over" viene accompagnata dagli archi, creando un sound ad effetto, ma nel complesso si rivela inconsistente e priva di interesse rispetto alle altre. In mezzo a queste due troviamo la verve rock di "Let it die" accompagnata da chitarra acustica nelle strofe. Ma l'adrenalina torna a scorrere con la bellissima e potente "Time of dying", la migliore dell'album nonché canzone che descrive alla perfezione il loro stile con le chitarre che alzano il volume e sprigionano una grande energia per tutta la traccia.
Saranno stanchi di suonare? Per niente... Basta ascoltare la successiva "Gone forever" dal sapore malinconico e suonata a tratti con le acustiche che segue lo stesso schema di "Never too late". E l'album chiude col botto con la title-track "One-x" che è sicuramente la canzone più completa e sintomo della maturazione del quartetto, aperta da un assolo di batteria, questa che io definirei come una lunga cavalcata è sorretta da riff avvolgenti, per non parlare dell'ottimo assolo di chitarra e chiusa da dei grandi cori finali.
Rispetto all'album di debutto non ci sono stati tanti cambiamenti almeno a livello di genere anche se c'è qualche innovazione a livello stilistico-compositivo: inserimento di qualche assolo (scelta ottimamente condivisibile), utilizzo maggiore rispetto al passato delle acustiche, qualche sperimentazione sonora dato dall'uso di nuovi strumenti (vai alla voce "Over 'n over") e qualche ballata molto più orecchiabile rispetto al precedente lavoro, che di ballads vere e proprie non ne conteneva granché. Buoni anche i testi che parlano soprattutto di malinconia, solitudine e vita.
Che dire il gruppo risulterà sconosciuto ai più, ma di sicuro merita di essere ascoltato. In conclusione un buonissimo cd che conferma le doti della band anche se il primo a mio parere rimane superiore.

Adam Gontier ha una voce importante, senza di essa il disco non avrebbe questa qualità.
One-X è un ottimo lavoro che dà conferma del salto di qualità e della maturità artistica del gruppo.
