Cosa era rimasto, nell'anno di disgrazia 1989, di quella rock star degli anni '70, del suo surf rock, del suo rockblues, della magnificenza prog, dell'estro vaudeville, dell'audacia sperimentale? Ad ascoltare "Nearly Human", parrebbe, solamente un uomo che non ha dimenticato di saper suonare la chitarra e che, su brani che non sanno più di quei sapori, riesce ad innestare, qua e là, degli assoli ancora poderosi.
Niente rock, però, in nessuna della sue manifestazioni; resta il suo (solitamente) apprezzabile, quanto immancabile, soul, nonché del rhythm and blues.
Niente di orribilis e niente di rivoluzionario, alcunché di geniale e poco di maniera: così è "Nearly Human", un disco che non aggiunge nulla, e che purtroppo sottrae il rock e l'audacia. Fosse stato, perlomeno, prodotto negli anni settanta, avrebbe giovato di arrangiamenti di maggior spessore, forse meno "pulitissimi" ma con più verve e grinta, e l'ostacolo sarebbe stato scavalcato senza sforzi. Ma arrangiato così per come fu, con queste tastierone vuote, senza muscoli volontari e involontari, il soul raffinato votato al pop liscio e radiofonico di "Parallel Lines" si perde per strada, quello di "The Waiting Game" scivola via senza guizzi, quello chill di "Fidelity" è bello ma senza personalità...
Il rhythm and blues di "Unloved Children" è prevedibile dall'inizio alla fine, quello della finale "I Love My Life" è troppo light; in quello, ottimo per un Joe Cocker, dell'opener "The Want Of A Nail" non capisci se sono ottoni veri od altre tastiere...
Come ci si può difendere dagli anni '80? E se penso che Todd è uno dei migliori produttori in circolazione da sempre (quindi anche in quella decade), allora sento quest'album e non posso che ripetermi che "Nearly Human" dovette per forza suonare così. E se non suonava così suonava anche peggio! La perplessità s'aggiunge al dispiacere quando, causa suoni ed arrangiamenti sì, ma non solo, scopri che "Can't Stop Running" ti fa ricordare "Africa" dei Toto, e che addirittura "Two Little Hitlers" ti fa venire in mente "Town Of Plenty" di Sir Elton John.
Era dal 1985 che Rundgren non pubblicava un disco: non poteva aspettare un altro annetto ancora? Non poteva attendere che gli anni ottanta finissero, per la musica e per tutti?
