Nel 1996 Tori Amos aveva un maialino da allattare e un disco da presentare in giro per il mondo. Intimo e allo stesso tempo urlato al mondo. Un album che veniva dopo un esordio memorabile e un secondo obiettivo perfettamente centrato. Un album che non voleva essere un capolavoro ma che lo è diventato senza il minimo sforzo. Due anni dopo il ricorso a venature elettroniche e arrangiamenti "plugged" le sembrò necessario per superare il trauma di un aborto; l'anno seguente la stessa formula musicale venne portata all'estremo nel viaggio (con ritorno) verso Venere. L'esercizio di stile che si è rivelato il dare voce a "voci" nate "maschie" e tramutate in "femmine", nel 2001, sembrava un salto verso qualcosa che "osasse" ancora di più, e in effetti così avvenne, ma non come lo si sarebbe previsto.
Il viaggio di Scarlet inizia nel 2002, un viaggio tanto affascinante quanto catartico, da molti non compreso, da altri malamente apprezzato, dal sottoscritto adorato per la sua magica e trascendentale capacità di raccontare, con un approccio indie-acoustic e melodie lineari e sinuose, una storia che è la storia di una terra, di una madre, di un essere umano come tanti, che ama crogiolarsi nelle sue esperienze, combattuto fra "l'annegare" del tutto nel proprio mondo (o, meglio ancora, nel mondo sconosciuto altrui) o il "tenersi a galla, fluttuando" nel migliore dei modi, calcolando pesi e misure, razionalizzando.
L'America è lunga e quel disco necessiterà di tempo per essere capito e amato davvero.
Tre anni dopo, riempiti da progetti di routine come dvd, live, raccolte, un sorprendente Ep di inediti, la Pollastrella chiede aiuto al Grande Beekeeper (o La grande? il dubbio continua a tormentare) per sfogare ingiustizie personali e universali: la scrittura musicale risente di una fiacchezza di fondo, pur brillando in vari episodi per originalità e ispirazione. L'amarezza del Tradimento, possibile o veritiero che sia, viene raccontata con toni folk e poppeggianti, in risultati più o meno riusciti.
E poi? Gli EFW si dicono generalmente delusi dall'ultimo tour, da molte scelte-non scelte artistiche -nonartistiche-, "pare che ci sarà un quartetto d'archi", "pare che si descriva una MILF", "pare che si sia data all'Emo che tanto piace ai frangettoni americani", "ci sono cinque battone che la accompagnano", "ma come fa una donna a chiamarsi Pip?", e così via. Un consiglio? Fottetevene.
"American Doll Posse" è un disco con gli attributi, questa volta sbattuti ben in vista. Certo, ha qualche (grande) difetto, da rintracciare ad esempio nella sovrabbondanza degli arrangiamenti in alcuni brani (dopo due album con chitarre sostanzialmente assenti, qui all'improvviso il maritino Mac Aladdin sfoga pesantemente il suo testosterone) o un approccio produttivo a volte ridondante e autoreferenziale. Ma c'è il pro anche nel contro; 23 brani (per ora, ma potrebbero diventare 25 con varie edizioni speciali) che spaziano da rimandi al mood di Choirgirl Hotel (la favolosa "Code red","Body and soul") ad un nuovo gusto retrò, di volta in volta blueseggiante ("You can bring your dog", con un finale spaventoso che continua a ricordarmi un'aggiornata versione di Janis Joplin, "Programmable soda"),middle-70s (il folk di "Almost rosey", "Beauty of speed", la Stevie Nicks che si sfoga in "Secret spell", la tanto bistrattata "Big wheel"), strizzate d'occhio al pop d'Autore (e da camera) in "Digital ghost", "Roostespur bridge", "Bouncing off clouds", la schitarrata Emo (ma Emo di qualità) che è "Teenage hustling".
E il meglio deve ancora arrivare. "Dragon" e "Smokey Joe" entrano di diritto in una ipotetica classifica dei migliori brani di sempre della Rossa, "Velvet revolution" è una balalaika di un minuto e mezzo che non fa altro che far rimpiangere la sua breve durata, "Yo George" e "Devils & ghost" sono intermezzi profondamente ispirati e ben strutturati, "Father's son" è molto vicina ai migliori momenti di Scarlet's walk e "Girl disappearing" non sfigurerebbe affatto in Under the Pink.
Specifico che tutto ciò è scritto di getto. Il tempo muterà i giudizi, metterà in risalto difetti (che, ricordo, a voler essere pignoli non sfuggono all'occhio attento) e ulteriori pregi (le esibizioni live daranno nuove vesti ai brani); soprattutto forgerà preferenze. Ma l'ascolto di questo disco per ora è deleterio: le luci del Nord di Amber Waves dovrebbero servire da esempio, ma qui si viene catturati del tutto, e ci si annega dentro, senza via di scampo.
