La prematura scomparsa del grande J.Porcaro avvenuta il 5 agosto del 1992 è stata per me, a quel tempo, come un fulmine a ciel sereno. Sinceramente non voglio esprimere i miei punti di vista sulle cause della sua morte, vorrei solamente dedicare questa recensione proprio a questo batterista particolarmente dotato.
Il nome Toto prende spunto dal cane del Mago di Oz, anche se, qualche giorno fa Shooting Star mi ha fatto notare che il vero nome di B. Kimball è Robert Toteaux che si pronuncia "Totò" ed è da questo nome che i musicisti hanno tratto spunto per chiamare il gruppo. Comunque sia, dopo l'uscita nel 1978 del primo album "Toto", il gruppo pubblicherà l'anno successivo "Hydra". La formazione è composta da J.Porcaro (drums & percussion), S.Porcaro (vocals & keyboards), D.Paich (vocals & keyboards), S.Lukather (guitars & vocals), D.Hungate (bass), B.Kimball (vocals). Il disco è formato da otto brani per un totale di circa quarantuno minuti.
Le differenze musicali e compositive di questo secondo disco sono poche ma decisive. Innanzi tutto questo album è dotato di sonorità più Hard con alcuni inserti progressivi, in particolare nel lungo pezzo "Hydra" la title track. Sostanzialmente è un Rock con sonorità più "tirate" e con ottime anche se brevi escursioni strumentali. Lungo tutto il CD sono in evidenza la batteria di Porcaro ma anche la chitarra di Lukather che si impegna in una serie di assoli notevoli ed ispirati. "Hydra" è il pezzo più variegato e lungo con una struttura musicale intrigante e ben strutturata. La voce di Kimball è cristallina e dotata di una buona estensione vocale. Una piccola curiosità su questo brano è che dopo la lista dei nomi dei sei musicisti compare la scritta Otot Music, che letta al contrario diventa... Più semplice ed immediato risulta "St. George And The Dragon", comunque sempre ben suonato e con dei validi assoli di chitarra. Forse il brano che preferisco è "99", un lento quasi una ballad, ottimamente congegnato che mi piace ascoltare spesso, la chiusura strumentale risulta raffinata e delicata, in poche parole un classico dei Toto. La partenza apparentemente calma e malinconica di "Lorraine" risulta essere in realtà una irresistibile canzone dai toni Rock rapidi e immediati. Il finale risulta a mio avviso un po' troppo ripetitivo. Altro esempio perfetto del Rock dei Toto risulta "All Us Boys" con in risalto la batteria di Jeff. La chitarra di Lukather in questo brano effetua un valido lavoro di sostegno sulla base percussiva. Secondo me il lato positivo di questa formazione è la notevole compattezza sonora ed artistica dei musicisti e anche il buon affiatamento umano. "Mama" sembra quasi un lento con in evidenza una eccellente prestazione vocale di Kimball e di Paich al piano. La breve intro di pianoforte di "White Sister" invece, preannuncia un altro brano Rock piuttosto carico ed assai entusiasmante. Ottima la voce di Kimball mentre, in chiusura, risalta una risplendente chitarra di Steve, sempre elegante e convincente. Il CD termina con "A Secret Love" che a mio avviso è una piccola perla di sensibilità e profondità, nonostante sia solamente un semplice brano cantato con il solo accompagnamento di tastiere e piano.
La copertina per così dire "nebbiosa" è comunque valida, con delle tonalità che variano dall'azzurro reale all'azzurro verde ftalo. In questa immagine è rappresentato un uomo che sembra quasi sfiorare una spada (oggetto o simbolo che comparirà anche in altre copertine dei Toto) forse pronto a combattere o forse pronto a riposarsi dopo un combattimento. Il booklet è ben fatto con alcune foto artistiche in bianco e nero che ritraggono i vari componenti del gruppo. Tra tutte spicca quella con J.Porcaro e soprattutto la ragazza che lo sta abbracciando...
In conclusione un disco consigliato a tutti gli appassionati dei Toto ma anche un po' (se mi permettete) ai "detrattori" di questo valido gruppo.
