Penso che, a volte, anche dei siti come Ondarock possano sbagliare. Per esempio, come giustificare il 4,5 dato a questo disco? Attacco di cattiveria? Ascolto superficiale? Non lo so, però posso senz'altro dire che per me "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" va oltre la sufficienza, pur non raggiungendo il supremo livello di "John Barleycorn Must Die".
Una cosa va detta: un calo d'ispirazione c'è: infatti l'album è riuscito a metà, con tre ottime canzoni e tre pezzi palesemente stanchi. Inoltre, il soul jazz prende il sopravvento sul folk, con risultati spesso non troppo esaltanti. Ma se esaminiamo a fondo l'album, potremo individuarne pregi e difetti.
L'inizio è stupendo: "Hidden Treasure" richiama alla memoria le atmosfere acustiche di "John Barleycorn Must Die" (il pezzo), con la carica di "Freedom Rider". Il flauto domina sugli altri strumenti, la chitarra folk-soul è perfetta, e il pezzo è uno dei più riusciti dell'album. Anche la lunga title-track, dalle parti del soul, è suggestiva. il pezzo, sebbene si perda un po'nel ritornello, possiede una fantastica coda strumentale basata su due accordi. Ma da questo momento l'album cala: "Rock and Roll Stew" tenta la via "hard", ma è priva di mordente e assomiglia più a un country (genere che io non apprezzo); mentre "Many a Mile to Freedom" è una pallida imitazione di "Empty Pages", stucchevole e un po'noiosa (dura circa 7 minuti). "Light up or Leave me Alone", invece, non riesce proprio ad entrarmi in testa.
Per fortuna che il finale è affidato a "Rainmaker": ritmo tribale, bel riff di flauto, assolo di chitarra finale per 7 minuti di ottima musica. Alla fine non siamo sicuramente estasiati, ma non sembriamo neanche usciti da un concerto di Gigi D'Alessio. Insomma, ci è chiaro che un 4,5 per questo disco è quanto meno ingeneroso, soprattutto se prendiamo in considerazione i vari 7 dati all'ultimo di Madonna e a robacce varie.
