Cosa dire sui Twisted Sister? Una ottima band che ha saputo farsi le ossa da sola, passando molto tempo nell'ombra (Jay Jay French e soci erano attivi sin dai primi anni '70). Alla uscita di questo disco d'esordio, "Under the Blade" (1982), il gruppo si ritrova agli albori dell'hair/glam metal e sempre in quel periodo usciranno varie formazioni come Ratt, Cinderella, Poison e Britny Fox. Personalmente, non ho mai considerato i Twisted Sister parte di questa corrente (idem W.A.S.P. e Lizzy Borden) perchè di glam non hanno proprio niente (tra l'altro Snider ha sempre definito il loro sound un puro e semplice rock n' roll). Infatti, il gruppo mostrò peculiarità che il loro padrino Alice Cooper sperimentò anni prima: look grottesco, performance dal carattere grand guignol e testi che parlano maggiormente di perversioni sessuali e tematiche horror.
Direi che l'80% dei meriti per la loro notorietà se li becca il cantante Dee Snider, dotato di una voce grandiosa (una sorta di Mick Jagger ancor più selvaggio) ed un carisma scenico che solo pochi frontman del rock possiedono. I Twisted sono stati, nel bene o nel male, un'inossidabile realtà dell'hard & heavy ottantiano, costellato di successi ma anche di accuse. Famose sono state le diatribe tra Snider e Tipper Gore, moglie del senatore Al e fondatrice della P.M.R.C., associazione molto attiva negli anni '80 che ha fatto incazzare (oltre ai Sister) W.A.S.P., Frank Zappa, Madonna, Van Halen, Scorpions, Warrant ed altri per le censure delle loro opere musicali.
Ma ora passiamo all'analisi di questo lavoro. "Under the Blade" è per me il disco più aggressivo che la band abbia mai prodotto finora e di melodie ci sono solo alcuni sprazzi, a differenza dei successivi dischi. "What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You)" dà l'inizio, uno dei pezzi più noti della loro discografia, oltre ad essere un pilastro insostituibile in ogni loro concerto. "Sin After Sin", "Shoot Em Down" e "Destroyer" mettono in risalto influenze provenienti da AC/DC, Black Sabbath e Kiss mentre "Tear It Loose" mostra le lezioni impartite da gruppi speed metal come Judas Priest e Motorhead. Una menzione a parte merita la title-track, una delle migliori della discografia della "Sorella Schizzata". Tornando alla P.M.R.C., Tipper Gore la accusò di essere un brano inneggiante al sadomasochismo e volete sapere cosa le ha detto Snider? "Come creatore di "Under the Blade", posso dire categoricamente che il sadomasochismo, il bondage e la violenza di questa canzone sono solo nella mente di Ms Gore".
Secondo (ma di poco) al masterpiece "Stay Hungry". Gli amanti del classico metal anni '80 e anche quelli dell'hair/glam non possono non conoscere questa pietra miliare, un lavoro di una band che ha saputo resistere al logorio del tempo e che ha mantenuto un nome anche con l'avvento delle mode grunge, alternative e nu metal. Da avere.
