Uno fra i più controversi album degli U2, Rattle & Hum esce nell’ottobre del 1988. Album sicuramente significativo per la storia del gruppo di Dublino, rappresenta una concreta e definitiva rottura con il periodo new wave degli U2.
“Rattle & Hum”, insieme a “The Joshua Tree”, rappresenta quel viaggio verso le radici del rock più vero ed intenso, del country e del blues. Il disco, ormai maggiorenne, è l’album della fine del rock classico, svolta che verrà sancita in seguito con “Achtung Baby”.
"Helter Skelter" è una cover dei Beatles, abbassata di un tono, bella, registrata durante il tour che seguì l’uscita di The Joshua Tree. Certamente impostata, perde di carica e aggressività rispetto all’originale beatlesiano. "Desire" è il singolo apripista di Rattle & Hum, effervescente anche se non originale. La versione gospel di “I still haven’t found…” è semplicemente geniale, rendendola insuperabile. Jimi Hendrix viene celebrato all’inizio di Bullet the blue sky, che è semplicemente adult rock fatto con i controcazzi,
tanto tosto nella musica quanto profondo e visionario nel testo. La cover di "All Along the watchtover" di Bob Dylan è una di quelle tante cosa che gli U2 si potevano benissimo risparmiare. Il disco si conclude con la tipica ballata U2, ovvero “All I want is you”, dal testo romantico e appassionato. Altri pezzi da 90 sono “When love comes to town” con la partecipazione di B.B. King, e "Angel of Harlem" che rievoca i fasti e i miti del jazz, John Coltrane e Miles.
Tutto sommato Rattle & Hum si configura subito come una buona antologia di pezzi,
e si impone di essere rock, con qualche penetrazione nel blues e nel country.
Questi sono ottimi pezzi live e studio che si susseguono in questo viaggio da Dublino oltre New York, fino a New Orleans e al Joshua Tree, al confine fra Nevada e California.
Tutto sommato, uno di quei dischi che è necessario avere.

La partenza live della cover beatlesiana di "Helter Skelter" è disarmante; Bono è in forma strepitosa ed è animato da una voce che gli permette di fare quello che vuole ed incantare il pubblico con prestazioni da brivido.
Gli U2 di una volta erano un'altra cosa, ed è bene che la gente se ne ricordi.

Gli U2 ebbero paura di pubblicare un vero seguito a 'Joshua' e misero le canzoni nuove in mezzo ai live, pensando di ingannare il pubblico.
Questo disco è, nella sua concezione, una cazzata colossale, un'ingenuità così grande come ne ho vista raramente in vita mia.
