Gli UFO sono ricordati più per aver ospitato nella line-up il chitarrista Michael Schenker degli Scorpions, che per quello che hanno fatto nel periodo iniziale della loro vita, intorno al 1970. Il pubblico britannico ha impiegato diversi anni, se mai lo avesse fatto, per accorgersi di questa straordinaria heavy-rock band.
Il materiale racchiuso in questa raccolta, annovera tutto ciò che la band ha prodotto con la Beacon/Decca in seguito al contratto avuto con Noel Moore, produttore discografico, e che è stato pressoché ignorato nel paese nativo. A dispetto di questo atteggiamento distaccato avuto in patria, gli UFO hanno letteralmente invaso il mercato discografico del Giappone e della Germania, incasellando una serie di successi mai sperati.
La band ha origine alla fine degli anni 60, quando il vocalist Phill Mogg, il bassista Pete Way e il chitarrista Mick Bolton suonavano in quel di Londra sotto il nome Hocus Pocus; dopo aver reclutato il batterista Andy Parker, gli stessi cambiano nome in UFO.
I primi frutti sono raccolti con il singolo "Melinda", una miscela di heavy rock psichedelico con il basso in prima linea, e "Unidentified Flying Object" rispettivamente A-B Side del singolo; subito si capisce che gli UFO fanno sul serio.
Nonostante nessuno in Inghilterra si accorga dell'uscita del primo LP "UFO", l'album è un successo in Giappone, favorito anche dalla cover del classico "C'mon Everybody" di Eddie Cochran fatto uscire come singolo solo ed esclusivamente per il pubblico nipponico.
La formula più heavy viene lentamente abbandonata con il secondo lavoro "UFO II Flying", verso orizzonti più progressivi tendenti allo space-rock più sporco e meno allucinato dei contemporanei Hawkwind.
Gli episodi migliori sono "Prince Kajuku" e "The Coming Of Prince Kajuku", caratterizzati da una spiccata vena progressiva ma sempre tenendo d'occhio un timbro heavy, degno dei primi periodi.
Ancora inspiegabilmente snobbati in Gran Bretagna, i nostri extra terrestri incidono un album live, che sotto tre nomi diversi ("Live", "Land In Tokyo" e "UFO Landed In Japan") precede anche i più accreditati lavori dei Deep Purple e Cheap Trick.
Subito dopo, Bolton lascia la band per raggiungere i Pink Fairies; inizialmente sostituito da Larry Wallis prima, e Bernie Mardsen poi, è la volta di Schenker, il cui arrivo coincide altresì con il cambio di label la Chrysalis Records.
Da ora in poi, e non si capisce il motivo, gli UFO riscuotono il doveroso successo anche in Inghilterra, ma oramai tutto era già stato scritto suonato.
Questa raccolta è la testimonianza di quanto questa straordinaria band ci ha lasciato da gustare a piccole dosi, del primo periodo a mio avviso più significativo. Non fatevi pregiudizi, ordinate subito, per chi non avesse mai ascoltato potrebbe risultare interessante, soprattutto se degli UFO conoscete soltanto l'epoca post-Schenker.
