Gli UNKLE venuti alla ribalta verso la metà degli anni 90, sono tra i fautori del trip-hop. Il trio londinese è formato da James Lavelle, artefice principale del progetto UNKLE, da Tim Goldsworthy e dal produttore Kudo.
Il nuovo album, che è stato pubblicato pochi giorni fa, si avvale di una poderosa virata verso sonorità più rock. Nonostante ciò, il suono elettronico e sprimentale che aveva finora rappresentato questo gruppo permane nel disco, intitolato "War Stories".
Tanti gli ospiti che hanno dato voce e corpo ai brani del disco, tra i quali Josh Homme dei Queens of The Stone Age, Ian Astbury dei Cult, 3D dei Massive Attack.
Le 14 tracce dell'album sono ottime, ci fanno subito notare la grandiosa dote di Lavelle & Co. nel creare musica viscerale, che martella il cervello e fa scaturire una miriade di emozioni.
Buona la performance di Josh Homme, che in "Restless" dà il meglio di sè, trasformando la canzone in una cantilena ipnotica, come la base musicale che lo accompagna. Arrivano poi le chitarre (che compaiono a metà canzone) a rendere il brano psichedelico e ancora più ipnotico.
Il primo singolo estratto dall'album è la traccia numero sette, "Burn My Shadow" cantata da Ian Astbury. Il brano (accompagnato da un video che mette il panico fin dall'inizio per arrivare a un inaspettato finale) è cupo e cattivo. La voce del leader dei Cult sembra quasi quella del leggendario Jim Morrison, profonda e ispirata. Il ritmo è, nel corso di tutta la canzone, potente e coinvolgente, degno di un vero brano rock, anche se è la presenza di un flebile piano che rende questo uno dei più interessanti episodi di tutto l'album. Incute timore, ci disturba l'animo e ci ammalia. Grandioso!
"Persons And Machinery", eseguita da Autolux, ha il ritmo che ricorda quasi un disco house, ma, anche in questo caso i tre londinesi sono riusciti a trasformare questa canzone in un vero capolavoro dal sapore mistico, che intimorisce grazie anche alla presenza di un suono di un carillon (che mi ricorda vagamente "No Surprises" dei Radiohead).
"Twilight" scritta e cantata da 3D dei Massive Attack, ci fa sognare e volare lontani con la fantasia con un'atmosfera ambient incredibilmente rilassante e onirica. Si aggiunge così un altro diamante a questo gioiello degli UNKLE.
Ultimi due brani del disco (escludendo una hidden track) sono "Broken" e "When Thigs Explodes".
Il primo, con la voce di Gavin Clark, è il più positivo di tutti, con un vago sentore anni '80 che ci riporta alle atmosefe dei Depeche Mode e dei Joy Division (con un pizzico di modernità in più).
Il secondo, dove ritorna Ian Astbury, è il brano più vicino alle sonorità trip-hop dei precedenti lavori degli UNKLE, una chiusura spettacolare che infonde una profonda malinconia e un senso di tristezza immenso.
Da notare la frase che apre e chiude il disco (all is forgiven), che rimanda al titolo dell'album, forse con il significato che le "storie di guerra", nonostante tutto, vanno perdonate.
Grande risultato quindi per gli UNKLE, che con qualche cambiamento (oltre alle sonorità, sono cambiati produttore e casa discografica) sono riusciti a creare un vero capolavoro, che si insinua nel cuore e sprigiona le emozioni più forti, senza mai cadere nella ripetitività. Un disco che consiglio vivamente di ascoltare a tutti. Non ve ne pentirete.
