Per motivi sconosciuti gli Uriah Heep, gente che ai tempi scrisse alcune delle pagine più belle dell'hard rock britannico, non sono mai riusciti a fare breccia nei cuori degli appassionati tanto quanto altri mostri sacri, ovvero i soliti Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple e Black Sabbath. Autori di perle come "Demons and Wizards" e "The Magician's Birthday", riuscirono, durante la loro fase più interessante, a coniugare l'irruenza dell'hard rock alle trame progressive delle tastiere di Ken Hensley, il tutto accompagnato dalla carismatica voce di David Byron.
Guidati da sempre dall'inossidabile Mick Box, chitarrista con grande gusto per la melodia, il gruppo con gli anni ha attraversato, oltre a più di quattro decadi, un'innumerevole quantità di cambi di formazione, gestiti a volte in maniera egregia, a volte molto meno. A metà anni Settanta, perso per strada un Byron ormai dedito più alla bottiglia che al microfono e dopo aver posto la parola fine alla loro incarnazione più popolare, Ken Hensley e soci fecero salire a bordo John Lawton, dando vita ad un sodalizio breve ma proficuo. Meno estroso del predecessore ma, evidentemente, più affidabile, Lawton si sarebbe rivelato la scelta azzeccata che avrebbe consentito al gruppo di continuare per qualche altro anno senza stravolgimenti di organico.
Il nuovo corso avrebbe visto il quintetto di Londra allontanarsi sempre più da quelle coordinate hard/progressive, che ne avevano decretato la fortuna, per entrare in territori vicini all'AOR. Scompaiono quindi i lunghi brani che avevano caratterizzato gli album degli esordi per avvicinarsi ad una proposta più melodica e di impatto, del tutto simile a quella della quale si sarebbero resi protagonisti i conterranei Rainbow da lì a breve nella loro versione "americana". La direzione musicale del gruppo, crediti alla mano, rimane nelle mani dell'ottimo Hensley, che trova nelle corde vocali di Lawton lo strumento perfetto per dare un degno suguito ai capolavori dei tempi che furono.
"Firefly" dà il via alla nuova avventura nel '77, seguito a stretto giro di boa da "Innocent Victim". Il cambio di direzione è evidente e sembra scontentare qualcuno ma, d'altro canto, svecchiare il proprio repertorio con brani dal tocco più fresco e moderno ai tempi doveva esser sembrato vitale. Convinti della svolta stilistica effettuata, gli Uriah Heep se ne escono l'anno successivo con questo "Fallen Angel", che purtroppo si sarebbe anche rivelato essere l'ultimo di questa versione del gruppo.
Confermata in toto la formazione che aveva già lavorato ai due dischi precedenti, la coordinate su cui l'album si muove non mostrano particolari cambiamenti rispetto al recente passato. "Woman of the Night" dà il via alle danze con un brano trascinante, sostenuto dall'ottima prestazione di Lawton, mentre "Falling in Love" e "One More Night" rappresentano a pieno i nuovi Uriah Heep, fautori di un rock melodico e di buona fattura. "Come Back to Me" è sicuramente l'apice dell'album: l'interpretazione sentita di Lawton si rivela essere la marcia in più di un brano emozionante e coinvolgente, una ballata sicuramente di spessore e classe. La seconda parte del disco sembra mostrare qualche momento di cedimento: se "Whad'ya Say" ha un bel ritmo e mostra dei musicisti in grande spolvero, brani come "Save It" o "Love or Nothing" non aggiungono molto a quanto già proposto dai primi pezzi, dando quasi l'impressione che Box e soci abbiano sapientemente piazzato le composizioni migliori nel lato A del vinile. "I'm Alive" è il classico colpo di coda, un pezzo roccioso ancora oggi presente nelle scalette del gruppo. A chiudere il disco, ed un'altra fase nella lunga storia degli Heep, ci pensa il brano omonimo, che sembra risentire, come gran parte del lato B, di una certa mancanza di idee.
In conclusione, "Fallen Angel" è sicuramente un buon disco, anche se, oggettivamente, disomogeneo, con alcuni brani degni di nota, ed infatti ancora oggi portati in tour, ed altri che sembrano essere puri riempitivi, poco ispirati e noiosi. Gli Uriah Heep, perso un talento come Byron e con il punk alle porte, si ritrovarono nella non facile situazione di dover portare avanti il gruppo all'interno di una scena musicale ormai in subbuglio. Il cambio di pelle, con il passaggio dall'hard progressive all'AOR, funzionò e avrebbe contraddistinto di fatto un decennio della produzione dei londinesi: i nostalgici ebbero da ridire ma ostinarsi a proporre un suono che ormai aveva fatto il proprio tempo sarebbe stato velleitario. Dopo "Fallen Angel" venne allestita l'ennesima formazione, che sarebbe durata pochissimo e avrebbe dato alle stampe il solo "Conquest", del 1980, additato dai più come il gradino più basso della lunga discografia degli inglesi. Il fiasco fece gettare la spugna persino ad un osso duro come Ken Hensley, fino a quel momento spina dorsale del gruppo. Il difficile compito di far ripartire gli Uriah Heep da zero sarebbe toccato a Mick Box, ormai unico superstite della formazione degli esordi, ma questa è un'altra storia.
