Gli Uriah Heep sono come il buon vino. . . con l'invecchiare migliorano.
Ormai la line-up è stabile dal 1987, e la solidità, nonché l'affiatamento, hanno inciso positivamente sul gruppo: ne è un esempio la straordinaria performance immortalata in ''Magic Night'', concerto risalente all'8 novembre 2003.
Non dovendo promuovere nessun album in particolare (l'ultimo infatti è ''Sonic Origami'' del 1998), il quintetto è libero di affiancare ai cavalli di battaglia qualsiasi canzone del loro sterminato repertorio, suonando pezzi che in concerto non si sentivano più da decenni.
Tuttavia la partenza è all'insegna della tradizione... una rullata di Kerslake introduce all'immancabile Easy Livin', probabilmente il pezzo più noto della band. Si tratta di un'esecuzione energica, ma molto tradizionale.
Ma ecco che subito arriva una chicca: tastiere inquietanti e taglienti, assieme ad una feroce chitarra, danno il via a Shadows Of Grief (tratta da ''Look At Yourself'', 1971)... un brano che, con il suo misto di progressive e psichedelia, nobilità l'intero live. Qui Bernie Shaw ci fa capire di essere il miglior cantante degli Uriah Heep dai tempi dell'insuperabile David Byron. Segue l'onesto hard rock/AOR di Cry Freedom, dove le tastiere vengono leggermente enfatizzate (con effetti di eco) con lo scopo di restare in tema e dare un'apparenza più prog alla composizione.
Giusto un attimo di pausa, ed ecco un altro grande ripescaggio. Si tratta di Pilgrim (proveniente da ''Sweet Freedom''), dove Phil Lanzon riesce a non far rimpiangere il mostro sacro delle tastiere Ken Hensley. L'alchimia perfetta tra i membri fa sì che questa versione sia quasi più avvincente dell'originale. La traccia successiva è la più recente Bad Bad Man: nonostante sia una canzone semplice, l'arrangiamento utilizzato in questo concerto, che vede alcune parti di chitarra sostituite da tastiera e pianoforte, la impreziosisce parecchio. Si ritorna poi negli anni '70 con Devil's Daughter. . . qui l'esecuzione è indubbiamente buona, ma nulla di trascendentale. Si può trovare, suonata nettamente meglio, in ''Spellbinder'' del 1995.
Proseguendo, ci imbattiamo in Wise Man. Il pezzo, morbido e delicato, è riprodotto in maniera impeccabile. Tuttavia la diversa impostazione vocale tra Shaw e Lawton (molto à-la Byron il primo, decisamente più profondo e blues il secondo), mi fa preferire l'originale presente su ''Firefly''.
Ancora un piccolo break ci introduce ad una gustosa parentesi acustica composta da Firefly, Heartless Land, Free Me e The Wizard. In particolare quest'ultima è riadattata in maniera superba e trova un notevole consenso da parte del pubblico.
Come di consueto negli ultimi anni, la band invita svariati ospiti per la parte conclusiva del concerto. Ecco comparire la bellissima voce di Heather Findlay che duetta con Shaw nella tenera Love In Silence.
Ma il pezzo forte deve ancora venire... entra in scena, tra l'ovazione di tutti gli heepster, John Lawton (cantante del gruppo dal 1977 all'80) che intona l'epica Been Away Too Long. Con Lawton e Shaw che si scambiano di continuo il ruolo di singer, la sensazione di potenza è assicurata: un altro brano per cui bisognerebbe avere questo live. I due si alternano anche in Stealin', altro pezzo di vecchia data che, oltre ad essere uno dei più noti della band inglese, all'epoca riscosse molto successo tra le stazioni radio FM americane.
Congedato anche Lawton, si ritorna alla formazione tradizionale per il bis della serata: come chiusura viene scelta l'immancabile The Other Side Of Midnight, praticamente onnipresente dal 1983 in poi... anch'essa suonata in maniera assolutamente impeccabile.
In conclusione mi sento di consigliare caldamente questo concerto: si tratta infatti di una performance di prim'ordine che piacerà anche a coloro che non stravedono per questa band. Inoltre il disco si presenta in formato SACD, ed i possessori di un sistema Dolby potranno godere di un'esperienza ancor più soddisfacente.
