La musica Metal, è risaputo, è un universo estremamente variegato e originale. I generi musicali presenti in questo mondo sono innumerevoli. Negli primi anni '80 i due generi di riferimento per gli appassionati del genere erano l'Heavy Metal e l'Epic Metal, dai quali nasceranno band diventate leggendarie le quali costituirono una base importante sulla quale appoggiarsi. Una delle band più importanti di quel periodo erano i Virgin Steele di David DeFeis; nella prima parte della carriera avevano creato uno stile caratteristico e proprio: il Romantic Epic Metal. Ciononostante non sembrava ancora giunto all'apice il percorso di DeFeis e compagni, il momento chiave ci sarà alla metà degli anni '90 con tre concept album che li consacreranno definitivamente. Due saranno dedicati al "Marriage of Heaven and Hell" di William Blake, il terzo disco sarà dedicato alla vita di Giulio Cesare.
La seconda parte del "Marriage of Heaven and Hell" è molto importante sia per comprendere le musiche del gruppo ma anche per conoscere il percorso artistico negli anni successivi. E' un momento decisivo nella loro storia, sia nelle musiche, sia nell'organico. In questo album è possibile ammirare un'evoluzione rispetto al disco che l'ha preceduto: tastiere in grande evidenza, gli assoli di chitarra non sono tecnici bensì eleganti, arrangiamenti precisi e gradevoli. Il risultato è una musica vigorosa, molto bella, in grado di ricreare delle grandissime atmosfere.
Il contraccolpo è costituito dalla voce di DeFeis: ruvida, sporca e molto grintosa che può far storcere il naso a tanti ma proprio queste qualità la rendono efficace e parecchio apprezzata. Questo si nota nella open track, "Symphony of Steele", e in "Rising Unchained", questi due brani risultano essere indicativi riguardo le sonorità espresse. Il punto più alto si raggiunge nella parte centrale del disco con due pezzi: "Prometheus The Fallen One" prima e con "Emalaith" successivamente. Su questi due pezzi è importante parlare di un fatto collegato alle canzoni appena citate: durante la registrazione del disco il batterista storico del gruppo, Joey Ayvazian, decide di lasciare. Al suo posto viene preso Frank Gilchriest il quale suonerà solo in tre brani, tra cui quelli centrali al disco (il terzo pezzo è "Crown Of Glory"). Si può notare che la batteria riesce ad addentrarsi meglio nella struttura delle musiche create da DeFeis e costituisce un grande aiuto, sfruttato poi al massimo nei dischi successivi. "Prometheus The Fallen One" ed "Emalaith" rappresentano indubbiamente un picchio stilistico, due canzoni micidiali ed estremamente trascinanti. La parte finale dell'album è di qualità e regge molto bene il confronto con un inizio splendido e una parte centrale incredibile.
Il giudizio complessivo è ottimo: una fusione affascinante tra le atmosfere dell'Epic, rese molto complesse ed originali, con uno stile ed un impostazione che strizza l'occhio al vecchio Heavy Metal. Tutto questo in un periodo dove altri generi ed altri modi di suonare stavano guadagnando la ribalta e l'attenzione di pubblico e critica. DeFeis andando in parte controcorrente riesce in qualcosa che pochi sarebbero stati in grado di fare. Un grande merito che rende i Virgin Steele un gruppo sicuramente importante nella storia del Metal, capace di lasciare dietro di sé dischi di valore assoluto.
