Prendete una serata qualunque, estiva o invernale che sia, siete nella vostra macchina e vi trovate confusi e annoiati nella vostra macchina, in balia tra le corse sfrenate e il logorante traffico. Per le strade sono accese le luci e le insegne intermittenti dei locali, segno che c'è vita fuori dalla vostra auto e voi siete lì dentro, chiusi e costretti a seguire l'ordine della fila delle auto. Allora prendete un Mp3 e cominciate ad ascoltare Maladroit: dopo non potrete non dire qualcosa su ciò che avete appena ascoltato.
Maladroit è forse l'album dei Weezer meno valorizzato: flop all'epoca della sua uscita (era il 2002) nessuno poi ne ha più parlato.
Ma cominciamo dall'inizio della tracklist. "American Gigolo" è la classica traccia che colpisce subito al primo ascolto. Chitarre forti, cori ben accordati, una raffica di YEAH e la voce di Rivers Cuomo, molto diversa da quella bassa del Green Album. Il primo piatto è servito.
Seguono "Dope Nose" e "Keep Fishin'", i due singoli estratti e provvisti di video su MTV: il primo segue lo stile strumentale di "American Gigolo", il secondo lo segue solo nella struttura (ovvero: 1° strofa - ritornello - 2° strofa - ritornello - cambio di tono con un'accellerata batteria - assolo d'intermezzo - ritornello - cambio di tono ecc. ecc.). "Take Control" chiude la prima parte hard (rock) e sicuramente la più commerciale di tutto il disco, per poi dare spazio ad una sorta di esperimenti musicali vari.
"Death and Destruction" e "Slob" sono pezzi meno energetici e non privi di svariate distorsioni strumentali e crescendi ingannevoli.
"Burndt Jamb" ci ricorda per certi versi "Island in the sun" e, con le stesse chitarre pacate, ci dà l'impressione di essere su un'isola sperduta del sud (provate a riflettere, magari l'avete già sentita da qualche parte, in una pubblicità...).
Prosegue l'ensamble "Space Rock", una sorta di rock più oscuro con un inizio quasi tutto cantato in falsetto, e subito dopo "Slave" in cui troviamo nuovamente il verso "in your arms" presente già in qualche canzone dell'album verde.
Le vere e proprie sorprese sono (a parere mio, pienamente personale) "Fall Togheter", un ballatona puramente rock, e "Possibilities" che contiene un riff d'intermezzo non poco furbo e in stile Green Day.
Qualcuno ha poi scritto che la traccia n° 12, "Love Explosion", è piena di assoli banali: invece anche questa è riuscitissima e capace di afferrare e incuriosire tutti la prima volta sentita.
Chiude il menù la melodica "December", pezzo che, dopo "Slob", ci appare com il più lungo di tutti.
Insomma c'è da dire che quest'album è tutto da ascoltare perché non segue mai lo stesso stile e cambia di volta in volta, ripercorrendo quasi tutti i generi del rock. Unica pecca dell'album è la durata troppo breve delle canzoni le quali non superano i 3 minuti. Ma per tutto il resto voto bene Maladroit, nonostante i giudizi sempre negativi che gli sono stati inferti.
