Qualcuno disse...."prima che i capelli di Mr. Coverdale diventassero biondi, prima che il video di "Still of The Night" imperversasse su MTV, prima di "1987", esisteva una grande band inglese. Si chiamavano Whitesnake".
Dopo l'uscita di "Come An' get It" (1981) David Coverdale vuole a tutti i costi approdare sul mercato americano, cercando di bissare il successo di vendite avuto in Europa fino a quel momento. Quando, anche dopo il tour negli States di supporto ai Jethro Tull ,non ci fu l'incremento di vendite sperato, Coverdale decise di cambiare line up, scegliendo musicisti secondo lui più motivati. Quando esce "Saints & Sinners" (1982) la formazione che lo ha registrato non esiste più, via Murrey, Marsden e Ian Paice, sostituiti da Colin Hodginkson, Mel Galley (Trapaze) e Cozy Powell, che grazie al loro background consentono alla band di mantenere un legame solido con la tradizione hard rock anni '70, ed insieme trionfano dopo un tour estenuante al Monsters of rock di Donington nel 1983.
A questo punto manca la prova in studio che arriva puntuale l'anno successivo con il nome di "Slide It In". Con quest'album, David Coverdale corona finalmente il sogno di far entrare i Whitesnake nel mercato americano; il disco ci presenta un hard melodico e tendente al radiofonico, che incomincia pian piano ad abbandonare le venature blues, caratteristica dominante nei primi Whitesnake. Mel Galley sostituisce degnamente Marsden scrivendo riff potenti e brani radiofonici, mentre Cozy Powell con il suo drumming potente ed elegante completa perfettamente il nuovo songwriting della band.
Il lavoro in questione presenta molti brani di rilievo, a partire dall'opener "Gambler", una hard rock che anticipa in qualche modo il sound di "1987", la titletrack ha un riff quadrato , travolgente, che in fase live sprigiona il meglio di se, non a caso è diventata per Coverdale una pedina importante nei recenti tour di reunion. "Love Ain't No Stranger" parte come una ballad sdolcinata dal piglio radiofonico che cambia pelle dopo meno di un minuto, tramutandosi in un classico del serpente bianco, un brano da leggenda in cui Coverdale riesce a coniugare melodia e potenza creando un mix unico, marchio di fabbrica negli anni a venire. "Slow An' Easy" è il brano del lotto a cui sono più legato : groove, Rock, blues, sesso, sudore, sangue, questo è quello che esce fuori dalle note di "Slow An Easy". Da Infarto. "All or Nothing" è forse il brano più duro del lotto in cui Coverdale dopo una strofa tipicamente hard sterza bruscamente verso un ritornello AOR di sicuro impatto, un po' in ombra nel resto dell'album, nel brano in questione si sente finalmente un Jon Lord protagonista, ormai anche lui è destinato a lasciare la band per la reunion dei Deep Purple che avverrà nello stesso anno di uscita di "Slide It In". Nel disco trovano spazio altre due grandi canzoni: l'anthemica "Guilty Of Love" e l' americaneggiante "Standin' In The Shadow".
Siamo ancora lontani dal sound di "1987", ma "Slide It In" è l'album che traghetta i vecchi Whitesnake verso quelli che verranno, è un ibrido che forse a posteriori può accontentare tutti i fan del serpente bianco.
P.S.Del disco esistono due versioni: una con le parti di chitarra di Micky Moody, ed una, originariamente pubblicata su Picture Disc, con la chitarra di John Sykes a sostituire quella del dimissionario storico componente della band.
