Era tanto tempo che non ascoltavo un album come questo. L'ho (ri)scoperto per caso nella mia libreria un po' grossina. Per carità, già sapevo chi fosse e cosa facesse Whitney Houston. Sapevo che aveva una bella voce, un certo carisma e una certa fama, ma non mi sono mai preoccupato di ascoltarla come si deve.
Allora un bel giorno mi metto a catalogare la mia libreria su iTunes e mi trovo tra le mani questo disco dall'aspetto sobrio. Lo infilo nel lettore cd del mio Macintosh e comincio a rinominare le traccie. Poi giungo alla fase in cui bisogna scrivere il genere musicale dei brani, quindi li metto in riproduzione... fu amore a primo "ascolto". Mi sono trovato improvvisamente al cospetto di suoni melodiosi, lisci e morbidi, alla voce superba di Whitney Houston al suo album d'esordio e a degli arrangiamenti magistrali. E dopo mi sono chiesto (una volta ripresomi) come avessi fatto a ignorare per tutto questo tempo l'esistenza di un album così bello? Grazie ad iTunes magari potrò riscoprire altri album come questo. Canzoni degne di nota sono sopratutto la n°1 (You give good love), la n°4 (Saving all my love for you), la ballata pop n°6 (How will I know) e la n°7 (All at once). I suoni riportano in maniera spontanea alle sonorità sintetiche dei mitici anni '80 e riportano ancora qualche residuo della mai-del-tutto-morta Disco music (ricordo che l'album è datato 1985).
Il genere che viene proposto è un Funk-pop maturo e orientato a un pubblico adulto (sono tutte canzoni d'amore) e facilmente ballabile. Mi spiace che Whitney si sia rovinata ultimamente abusando di qualsiasi droga che esista sulla terra, ma non posso negare il suo ruolo fondamentale nella musica pop, sia come grande interprete, sia come voce magistrale. Spero che si riprenda e pubblichi presto un buon album (non come gli ultimi due/tre).
