Dopo tre anni, viaggi in giro per il mondo e comparsate di Jared in qualche film i quattro si chiudono in studio e grazie a Josh Abram, produttore tra l'altro dei Linkin Park, sfornano "A Beautifil Lie". Negli States esce ufficilamente il 30 Agosto 2005, ma era già disponibile in rete almeno cinque mesi prima, mentre da noi e in Europa è uscito lo scorso febbraio. L'album è a meta strada tra la musica dei My Chemical Romance e gli Incubus più incazzati, anche se con sfumature nuove. Le canzoni scorrono veloci e sembra quasi non accorgersi di stare con le cuffie a tutto volume. Ogni singolo brano ha una costruzione precisa, infatti anche gli arrangiamenti sono molto completi, perché non vi troviamo solo chitarra, basso e batteria, ma anche tastiere, effetti elettronici e addirittura in "Was it a dream?" il brano è scandito dai tuoni di un temporale e dal sottofondo di una leggera pioggerellina. I pezzi che danno la migliore prospettiva della musica del gruppo sono "The Kill" e "From Yesterday", che letteralmente sconvolgono l'ascoltatore. A parte la forza di tutte e due le canzoni, in "The kill" Jared dà il meglio di sé nell'interpretazione, infatti in una recente intervista ha dichiarato che "The Kill" è il pezzo migliore che abbia scritto. Altra peculiarità di queste due canzoni sono i due videoclip che li accompagnano. Diretti da Jared, sotto lo pseudonimo di Bartholomew Cubbins, sono due veri e proprio microfilm. Il video di "The Kill" si rifà molto a "Shining" di Kubrick, mentre quello di "From Yesterday" è un vero proprio tributo al mondo orientale. Due curiosità: il video di "The kill" ha vinto il MTV2 Video Music Awards come miglior video, mentre quello di "From Yesterday" è il primo video statunitense nella storia, che è stato trasmesso in Cina.
Le altre canzoni dell'album si avvicinano molto di più al genere Alternative statunitense, con giri di chitarra semplici ma efficaci, e con qualche effettuccio di troppo. Nonostante questo le canzoni dell'album sono davvero molto belle e particolari, qualcosa di diverso nel panorama internazionale. Di sicuro in Italia non c'è nessuno che fa questa musica e forse ce ne sarebbe bisogno.
Fanno eccezione nell'album gli ultimi tre pezzi: "A modern Myth", "Battle of One" e "Hunter". La prima è una canzone totalmente diversa, unico strumento la chitarra acustica, la seconda si avvicina molto ai pezzi del primo album quando ancora il gruppo era meno MTVizzato, "Hunter" invece è una cover Bjork anke se l'originale ne vale mille, sia per la voce inimitabile della cantante islandese, sia per l'arrangiamento.
In conclusione un gruppo ed un album tutti da scoprire.
Ultima curiosità: se avete tempo andate su youtube e cercate il video di "The Kill" in versione acustica registrata per Daily Download. Imperdibile.

La vera grandezza di Jared Leto è la sua capacità interpretativa, apprezzabile solo dopo alcuni ascolti attenti dell’intero album.
Se ti capita fra le mani un buon album, che non cambierà la storia della musica ma è di buona fattura e con qualche buon messaggio da lasciare, perché gettarlo lì?
