Il concetto di questo "provenire da Marte", implica già la diversità, l'alienazione, l'estraneità agli affari del mondo e ci riporta all'atmosfera di Cronache marziane di Bradbury. Al primo impatto il suono è molto "nu-metal" o meglio, con una definizione più attuale, "emo-core", un genere musicale di nuova generazione. Neo-romantico, neo-gotico, molto "screaming". In Italia sono arrivati con il classico ritardo accademico, dopo circa due anni dall'uscita dell'album.
Atmosfere rarefatte, invasioni aliene, paure recondite. Fughe disperate, guerre tra mondi, atterraggi su Marte, partenze interspaziali. Tutto questo era nel primo album: invece, questa volta l'alieno è molto più vicino a noi. Anzi, è dentro di noi. In questi giorni possiamo vedere nei principali network musicali in "heavy rotation" il videoclip di "The Kill", ispirato a Shining (Overlook Hotel) di Stanley Kubrick. I componenti della band alloggiano presso questo hotel e sono perseguitati dai rispettivi alter-ego, vestiti di tutto punto per suonare a una festa anni '20, popolata di gemelli identici tra loro. Tutto quanto il brano è concentrato sulla paura di se stessi e delle proprie ombre interiori, tra le parole trapela un conflitto psicologico talmente forte da spingere al suicidio ("Come break me down - Bury me, bury me - I am finished with you"). "A beautiful lie", la title track è una specie di inno alla menzogna, all'ambiguità, alla volontà di mascherare il passato giocando con la verità. Attraverso la sontuosità di "From Yesterday" (l'inizio è una chiara citazione degli U2) conosciamo la crisi mistica: infatti il cantante Jared Leto pone delle domande a un'entità indefinita, ma molto potente, cioè a colui che "ha il mondo sul proprio volto" ("On his face is a map of the world").
I suoni più ricorrenti e riconoscibili sono sferrate di chitarre potenti, alternate alla voce ora vellutata e languida, ora rotta da vere e proprie urla di rabbia, dolore, disperazione, impotenza. Suonano bene, ricordano diverse altre band già sentite, come Evanescence, Linkin Park, Incubus, possono essere definiti anche come "versione edulcorata dei Tool"; passano dall'hard estremo come in "Attack" o "Battle of one" alla ballad struggente di "A modern myth" resa molto elegante dagli archi e dalla chitarra acustica. In "R-Evolve" sembrano i pensieri di un condannato a morte, che riflette su quello che ha fatto e sul perché, effettivamente, non ha vissuto una vita vera. E invoca l'esecuzione per liberarsi da se stesso ("It's time for execution; it's time to execute"). La band di Jared Leto (un volto conosciuto, attore co-protagonista in film come Alexander e Lord of War) sta facendo strada: negli USA i 30 Seconds to Mars sono famosi già da qualche anno, probabilmente troveranno terreno fertile anche in Europa.

I videoclip di 'The Kill' e 'From Yesterday' sono due veri e propri microfilm.

La vera grandezza di Jared Leto è la sua capacità interpretativa, apprezzabile solo dopo alcuni ascolti attenti dell’intero album.
Se ti capita fra le mani un buon album, che non cambierà la storia della musica ma è di buona fattura e con qualche buon messaggio da lasciare, perché gettarlo lì?
