Come si suol dire "Morto un Papa se ne fà un altro", ed è quello che hanno fatto i Creed con l'uscita del leader Scott Stapp e l'acquisto del nuovo singer Myles Kennedy (ex Mayfield Four), ribattezzandosi Alter Bridge.
Finalmente con questo nuovo line-up la band è riuscita a scrollarsi di dosso l'etichetta di "Sosia dei Pearl Jam" a causa della spudorata somiglianza vocale tra Stapp ed il re Eddie Vedder (anche se a mio avviso sul piano strumentale mi ricordano vagamente i "sobri" Metallica di Reload e Black album).
Rispetto ai lavori precedenti i Creed-Alter Bridge hanno integrato il loro stile con una voce molto più incisiva e meno standardizzata rispetto al singer precedente, ma la chicca che tutti gli estimatori del gruppo aspettavano è un'altra: finalmente vi è una buona presenza di ASSOLI DI CHITARRA! Grazie a Dio quel dannato di Mark Tremonti ha capito di saperla suonare, ma come è possibile che un chitarrista abile come lui si sia svegliato solo ora e per ben tre album prima di questo non si sia degnato di eseguire uno straccio di assolo?
Passando ai pezzi forti di "One Day Remains" possiamo rilevare influenze di vari tipi: dal primo singolo "Open Your Eyes" che si presenta con una forte energia lasciando però ampio spazio alla melodia, a "Broken Wings" che ha un chorus che somiglia in maniera imbarazzante alla hit dei precedenti Creed "My Sacrifice". Un altro pezzo importante è "Burn It Down" che fa rimembrare alcune atmosfere riflessive ed un tocchetto acide degli Alice in Chains per poi passare a "In Loving Memory" che per il mio punto di vista è il pezzo meglio interpretato anche perché coinvolge emotivamente la band, dato che è stato dedicato alla madre di Mark Tremonti da poco scomparsa.
Nel complesso la track-list scorre velocemente e in modo uniforme. Le canzoni sono facilmente memorizzabili grazie anche al tocco che ha sempre contraddistinto questa band:
Senza sbilanciarsi troppo, questo è un buon disco, chiaramente che non porta alcun tipo di novità o innovazione, non fà certamente parte dei dieci album che porterei su un'isola deserta, ma è semplicemente buona musica. Bisogna però dare atto agli Alter Bridge di essere una delle poche band che cerca di mantenere in vita quel poco che è rimasto del rock-grunge in chiave melodica, anche se dovranno lavorare ancora molto per raggiungere risultati più eccelsi.
Cumunque consiglio a tutti di ascoltare questo questo album, avrete praticamente modo di sentire l'evolzione di una band che ci ha tenuto compagnia durante la seconda metà degli anni '90, e nulla di più.
