Parlare, raccontare e recensire un lavoro degli Anathema è sempre un piacere perchè sono una di quelle band a cui non manca di certo la personalità unita ad una grande qualità di scrivere testi e dalle perfette produzioni ed ogni volta regalano delle perle di assoluto valore.
Il loro inizio Death/Doom/Metal è oramai solo uno splendido ricordo; gia con "Alternative 4" hanno fortemente abbassato la loro "potenza" musicale per poi proseguire con il capolavoro "Judgement" e il bellissimo "A Fine Day To Exit" lavoro quest'ultimo con leggere influenze post-rock.
Questo "A Natural Disaster" si presenta con una copertina a dir poco bellissima (raffigura una barchetta in mezzo al mare illuminata dalla luce del sole al tramonto ed un uomo solo che sembra essere triste ed addolorato,abbandonato al suo destino) e gia si capisce che sarà un viaggio fatto di melodie, malinconie e voci sognanti e a volte sofferenti.
L'inizio dell'opera è soft con "Harmonium", canzone lenta e a tratti ripetitiva con la voce che accompagna la melodia in un'odissea di sofferenza;si sale di intensita' (e soprattutto di qualità) con "Balance", dall'inizio incalzante, avvolgente, fatto di chitarre e batteria che sembra esplodere da un momento all'altro, il tutto contornato con lo splendido cantato di Vincent Cavanagh che gioca quasi ad essere Thom Yorke dei Radiohead ma sempre con grande classe ed eleganza.
Il terzo passaggio di questo viaggio si chiama "Closer", traccia che abbina la solita melodia triste ad una voce penetrante influenzata da una leggera vena elettronica; brano piacevole che ci prepara alla prossima perla del disco "Are you there". Nel sentirla mi ricordano vagamente i (migliori) Sigur Ros; che dire, bellissima, sonorità che ti trasportano in un'altra dimensione, melodie penetranti che al primo ascolto ti prendono e ti cullano per tutti i quasi 5:00 minuti di durata.
Il percorso continua con "Childhood dream", lentissima, suoni accarezzati dai versi di un bimbo sognante e da una leggerissima chitarra; nel finire una voce proveniente forse dall'Aldilà chiude il brano e sembra come avvertirci che la prossima canzone, "Pulled Under At 2000 Metres A Second" ci darà una bella scossa. Qui si ritorna (vagamente, sia chiaro) ai tempi di "Judgment", con chitarre pesantissime arricchite al centro della traccia da urla disumane, ma è solo un "omaggio" ai tempi che furono perchè si torna presto al nuovo percorso intrapreso dai fratelli inglesi.
La Title-Track "A Natural Disaster" è una buonissima ballad cantata dalla splendida voce femminile di Lee Douglas.A me non fa impazzire nonostante quasi tutta la critica la vede come la punta di diamante del disco.
La massima espressione di questo bellissimo album, secondo il mio parere è l'incantevole "Flying". Ogni volta che l'ascolto ho i brividi, chiudo gli occhi e mi immagino proprio come l'uomo sulla barca nella copertina, solo con me stesso a contemplare le luci del tramonto che penetrano ed illuminano il mare cristallino. Parte in maniera lentissima con la voce del singer che risulta eterea e penetrante a primo impatto per poi crescere in maniera progressiva.
Segue "Electricity", dal bellissimo testo che parla dell'amore, composta da dolcissime chitarre e soavi pianoforti. Chiude questo "percorso d'amore" il brano "Violence" esperimento strumentale che nonostante sia di lunga durata riesce a rilassare anche le menti piu' agitate e portarle nella pace più assoluta.
E' passata quasi un'ora ma sembra essere volata...
Questo è un altro capolavoro degli Anathema e fare paragoni con i precedenti dischi loro è assolutamente impossibile perchè ogni volta si scoprono orizzonti musicali mai visti prima.
Sento dire spesso che hanno copiato i Radiohead, i Sigur Ros, i Muse o addirittura che prendono spunto dagli Air; sicuramente possono ricordarli, non lo metto in dubbio, ma per me sono stati, sono e saranno semplicemente gli Anathema, unici nel loro modo di regalare sogni ed emozioni...

Nulla qui è mai banale perché niente è lasciato al caso, tutto sfiora la perfezione.
Ogni canzone è una storia a sé che va a comporre uno strepitoso mosaico curato in ogni minimo particolare.

Il sound dei nostri dice definitivamente addio alle influenze dei primi dischi.
A Natural Disaster è infatti un ottimo lavoro, ottimamente strutturato e ricco di tracce atmosferiche ed intense.
