E' dal 2001 che in casa Anathema si respirava aria di cambiamento.
Era in quell'anno, infatti, che il gruppo metal di Liverpool, resistito a numerosi cambi di line-up, pubblicava "A Fine Day To Exit", album sperimentale accolto con pareri contrastanti, con il quale i fratelli Cavanagh e soci sembravano imprimere una prima svolta al doom degli esordi, virando verso altre sonorità più calme e tendenti all'alternative rock.
Nel 2004 esce "A Natural Disaster" per l'etichetta Music For Nations, è il risultato è senza dubbio sorprendente. Il sound dei nostri dice definitivamente addio alle influenze dei primi dischi, pur sempre lontane dal metal più tradizionale. Qui a farla da padrone, infatti, sono l'alternative rock alla Radiohead e la psichedelia di ispirazione 70's e pinkfloydiana, che contribuiscono fortemente alla piena riuscita del nuovo esperimento degli Anathema: "A Natural Disaster" è infatti un ottimo lavoro, ottimamente strutturato e ricco di tracce atmosferiche ed intense come l'iniziale Harmonium, dalle esplosioni micidiali ed improvvise, la stupenda Closer con il suo vocoder a tratti spiazzante, la magnifica title track, dove la calda voce di Leon Douglas si fonde alla perfezione con il tappeto sonoro creato dai nostri, e la grandissima Flying, dal crescendo progressivo e superbo.
Tutto perfetto? Forse no, ci sono un paio di pezzi, Pulled Under At 2000 Metres A Second e la conclusiva Violence, che, richiamando sonorità del passato recente, sembrano un pò fuori dal contesto del disco, anche se la seconda resta, con il suo pianoforte struggente, uno dei momenti più emozionanti di questo "A Natural Disaster".
Complimenti agli Anathema, quindi, per avere confermato le loro grandissime capacità e per non aver avuto paura di voltare pagina. Certo, c'è sempre il rischio di perdere credibilità e, soprattutto, di dire addio ai fan di lunga data, ma, se lo si fa senza timore e con un album ottimo come "A Natural Disaster", si può anche chiudere un occhio, non vi pare?
