Black Sabbath... Un nome, ma non una garanzia.
Sfortunatamente questo straordinario gruppo, dopo l'abbandono del mitico Ozzy Osbourne, nel lontano 1978 e dopo l'uscita del pessimo "Never Say Die", non fu più lo stesso. Il leader del gruppo e chitarrista straordinario Tony Iommi lo rimpiazzò con il bravissimo vocalist Ronnie James Dio, che aveva appena lasciato i Rainbow. Sembrava una colossale rinascita con uno degli album più belli dei Sabbath, "Heaven And Hell", ma pronta, purtroppo fu la nuova ricaduta con questo "Mob Rules" del 1981.
L'album in realtà è superiore a molte successive produzioni, ma delude per il semplice fatto che assolutamente non regge il confronto con "Heaven And Hell".
L'opener Turn Up The Night è abbastanza energica, ma non è niente di eccezionale... soliti riff di Iommi che non delude mai, ma stufa presto. Voodoo richiama i primi Sabbath, quelli del doom, di Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, con un sound più cupo, un tagliente Iommi, ma è tutto già sentito.
Uno dei pezzi migliori dell'album è The Sign Of Southern Cross, dopo un incipit da ballata, scocca la scintilla e Butler al basso e Appice alle pelli martellano un ritmo ossessivo ma mai pesante, che fa scorrere gli oltre 7 minuti, con inserti di Iommi sempre azzecati che spezzano la monotonia della base.
I Sabbath non cambiano mai e arriva l'immancabile strumentale, che in realtà con i Sabbath a che vedere ha ben poco. E5150 son 3 minuti di strani suoni e distorsioni inutili che culminano con qualche nota, sempre distorta, che ci introduce a The Mob Rules. La title track è una delle peggiori dell'album, vuole essere energetica e trascinante, ma non lo è affatto. Il solito Iommi dà prova della sua bravura col classico assolo centrale ma nient'altro si salva del pezzo. Come Voodoo anche Country Girl si presenta con un sound più cupo e ricercato, il classico dei vecchi Sabbath, e risolleva l'album dopo i disastri delle 2 precedenti tracce, ma anche questa non lascia molto.
Slipping Away è anonima, solito Iommi, ma niente di più.
Il finale è anche la parte migliore dell'album. I Sabbath non deludono più e con Falling Off The Edge Of The World danno vita ad una song dal ritmo trascinante che cresce e culmina nella parte centrale con uno splendido assolo di Iommi.
Il miglior pezzo dell'album è anche l'ultimo. Over And Over è una ballata commovente dove Dio sa emozionare con la sua voce unica, assecondata da una melodia retta dagli ottimi Butler e Appice e resa ancor più speciale dal solito - ennesima ripetizione - straordinario Tony Iommi.
E forse quest'ultima, splendida canzone è la sola a giustificare l'acquisto del disco. Album che resta comunque mediocre, nonostante Iommi ce la metta tutta a dare ai Sabbath una nuova linfa vitale, cercando allo stesso tempo di mantenere parte di quel sound dei primi 5/6 album, che rese celebre il gruppo.
