"Self Portrait" era stato un album da scordare. Passano pochi mesi e Dylan torna con un disco migliore. Non straordinario. Prove tecniche di resurrezione?
C'è da aspettare ancora. Dylan fa pochi concerti, in questo periodo (1970), si è scrollato delle etichette pesanti di dosso e ci riprova con qualcosa di diverso. Lascia la voce da crooner e lancia "New Morning": solo tre delle canzoni di questo album verranno riprese dal vivo... forse anche Dylan non lo ama troppo. Eppure sulla sua autobiografia vi ha dedicato un intero capitolo, spiegando che doveva nascere come musica per un'opera teatrale, un progetto accantonato, ma le canzoni sono rimaste.
Punti di forza: "Day Of The Locusts", che parla del giorno della sua laurea ad honorem a Princeton con ironia nemmeno tanto velata, "Time Passes Slowly", "The Man In Me", i due recitativi finali, "Three Angels" e "Father Of Day", senz'altro affascinanti.
Le altre non si elevano dal limbo della mediocrità, soffrono di un arrangiamento frettoloso. "Winterlude", per chi non lo sapesse, è la madre di "Buonanotte fiorellino", "If Not For You" somiglia a "Tutto quello che un uomo" di Cammariere (c'è un verso identico, e orribile). I figli battono le madri 2 a 0. Nulla di più, nulla di meno. Album di transizione, pura e non semplice: dylaniana.
P.S.: Ho messo 3/5 ma so che ci sono dei veri estimatori dell'album che potrebbero protestare... "If not for you, my sky would fall, rain would gather too, oh what would I do if not for you!"
