Dalle ceneri agli allori
Sono gli ultimi mesi del 2000, quando Aaron Fink e Mark James Klepaski, rispettivamente chitarrista e bassista dei Lifer, gruppo alternative-metal, decidono di lasciare la band e di fondare un nuovo complesso assieme al cantante Ben Burnley, conosciuto da Fink alle scuole superiori, e a Jeremy Kummel alla batteria. Inizialmente decidono di chiamarsi Plan 9, poi però prende il sopravvento l’attuale nome Breaking Benjamin.
Pubblicano il loro primo album nel 2002, dopo qualche EP di promozione, sotto l’egida della Hollywood. “Saturate” ha un buon successo, e i BB iniziano a girare l’America facendo da spalla, tra le altre band, a Evanescence, 3 Doors Down e Godsmack. Nel 2004 l’album che li consacra ancora di più al grande pubblico, “We Are Not Alone”, che viene subito seguito, per motivi ancora da chiarire, dall’abbandono di Hummel e il suo immediato rimpiazzo con Chad Szeliga, ex batterista degli Sw1tched.
La scelta dei due fondatori del gruppo di lasciare i Lifer è basata soprattutto sulla voglia di passare dal “piattume” dell’Alternative alla sporcizia e l’espressività del Post-Grunge. Tutti i membri dichiarano di essere stati grandi ascoltatori di Pearl Jam e Nirvana nella loro adolescenza, ma la loro musica non si rivela un semplice copia-incolla al quale ormai ci siamo abituati in questo panorama; bensì c’è l’introduzione di accordature più basse e una melodia un po’ più demarcata.
Ed ecco che, nel 2006, pubblicano il loro nuovo album, Phobia. Sarà un proseguire dell’ascesa o un passo indietro verso la conquista dell’Europa?
Phobia: stili diversi, paure ed emozioni.
L’album, c’è da dire, parte un po’ a rilento, con una “Intro” che si sarebbe potuta benissimo risparmiare. Un minuto di rumori urbani, arpeggi e voci standardizzate: sarebbe stato meglio accorparla alla seconda traccia, prima vera canzone dell’album.
“The Diary Of Jane” è la storia rabbiosa di un rapporto di incomprensioni e insoddisfazioni, dal ritornello orecchiabile e qualche accenno di screaming niente male. Pecca un po’ in ripetitività, ma per il resto si lascia ascoltare benissimo. Resta in testa.
“Breath” è una delle tracce più belle dell’album, con un ottimo giro di basso e pieni accordi grunge. Le vocalità di Ben si esprimono benissimo in questa storia di amori ingrati e desideri di vendetta, rabbia e odio. “I’m waiting, I’m hating; realize: start hiding”. Sto aspettando, sto odiando: renditene conto, inizia a nasconderti. In questo pezzo si sentono le decise influenze Nirvana e qualche somiglianza con certi pezzi dei 3 Doors Down.
“You” è la canzone che non ti aspetti dai BB. Non c’è rabbia, c’è sconforto. Non c’è accusa, c’è pentimento. Gli errori di un uomo che non vuole che siano ripetuti da nessun altro. Piacevole, ma c’è di meglio.
“Evil Angel”, in una parola, spacca. Con "Evil Angel" capisci che “You” non era un errore, che questi Breaking Benjamin sono capaci di volere bene e di esprimere le loro passioni. E qui, le esprimono fottutamente bene. Gran lavoro di batteria.
Sesta traccia è “Until The End”, ricorda molto i primi Nickelback avvicinandosi più prepotentemente al rock. Pecca nel ritornello un po’ banale e monotono, è uno di quei classici singoli passabili in radio, non fosse per qualche screaming/growl.
Arriviamo dunque a “Dance With The Devil”, pezzo nel quale a mio parere si toccano i picchi più alti di qualità: aggressivo, martellante, a volte imprevedibile. E’ un brano che da solo riesce ad alzare la qualità generale dell’album. Anche qui bello sforzo di Chad Szeliga.
E dopo un bel titolo, uno un po’ più scadente. “Topless” ha dalla parte sonora un bel giro di chitarre, ma non sembra esserci collegamento tra il suono e la voce, molto più bassa del solito, di Burnley. Testi banali, c’è aggressività ma non convince. Un pezzo “heavy”, che non ti aspetti dall’album: ottimo fuori dai temi, ma in questo contesto c’entra ben poco.
“Here We Are”: eccoci qui. Storia di un rapporto di continua ricerca destinato a chiudersi. Bello, molto bello, è la voce in questo brano a trasportare il resto.
“Unknown Soldier” presenta i migliori testi dell’album, accompagnata anche da delle chitarre finalmente ispirate. Unica pecca l’intro, che ricorda One dei Metallica: accostamento un po’ azzardato…
In “Had Enough”, canzone cattiva, impregnata di violenza e insopportazione, troviamo dei bei testi e dei riff ancora più convincenti. Tra le migliori dell’album.
'Ok, forse in Had Enough ho esagerato, parliamone'. Può essere questo il succo del significato di “You Fight Me”, ottima conclusione dell’album, che vede cambi di ritmo e chitarre ben dosate.
A seguire, l’immancabile “Outro”, che parte meglio dell’Intro, ma che poi sfocia nei soliti rumori dell’inizio, quasi a ricordare a chi ascolta che c’è del Grunge in quello che sente… inutile anche questa.
Per chiudere, la versione acustica di “The Diary Of Jane”, accompagnata da un bel suono di pianoforte e da qualche arco. Bell’extra, carino, molto diversa dall’originale.
Commento finale
“Phobia” si rivela un pregevole incontro tra melodia e caoticità, emozioni e aggressività. Protagonisti assoluti dell’album sono le capacità sonore del cantante, non eccezionali ma spremute al massimo, e le chitarre potenti e divaganti. Dal punto di vista dei testi, a brani ottimi [Unknown Soldier tra tutti], si susseguono testi piatti e anonimi. Pezzi migliori “You Fight Me”, “Dance With The Devil”, “Here We Are” e “Evil Angel”.
In definitiva, un altro passo avanti nell’evoluzione della band, che si assesta su strade un po’ più hard-rock, abbandonando quasi definitivamente gli esordi Alternative Metal. Acquisto consigliato.

"The Diary Of Jane": buon crossover tra alternative rock e nu metal, orecchiabile e ben strutturata.
Il disco è 'frizzante e allegro' al primo ascolto ma rivela inesperienza e influenze a volte in contrasto.

Il primo singolo, "The Diary Of Jane", parla di una relazione di amore-odio; resta una canzone abbastanza scontata, ma è decisamente ben fatta.
È il classico album che si lascia ascoltare molto piacevolmente le prime due/tre volte; poi la monotonia generale fa venire la voglia di sentire altro.
